Report: BSMA Championship
By TMX Archives on 18th May 16
The sun made an appearance again for the third round of the Bridgestone BSMA Championship at the well-prepared FatCat Moto Parc, near Doncaster.
With most classes full there was close exciting racing in all groups on the very demanding sand track.
First to the line was the Auto class with Shaun Mahoney and Freddie Bartlett making their return to the track after injury lay-offs.
The pair battled hard throughout the weekend and Mahoney came out on top with three race wins to his name against Bartlett's two victories, just six points separating the pair at the end.
Third spot was taken by wildcard rider Archie Girdham.
The Junior 65cc class was next out and wildcard Tyla Hooley blasted to five straight wins.
There were some battles for the next four place between Ellis Poole, Mckenzie Marshall, Lewis Roden and Ben Humphries with only 21 points separating second to fifth at the end of the weekend.
Keelan Hope had to relinquish the series leader's red plate after carding two seconds, a sixth and two DNFs, meaning he was out of the top five for the first time this year.
The Small-wheel 85cc class was dominated by two wildcard entries.
Local lad Ben Clark claimed the overall win, ahead of Toby Potter, with red plate holder Ben Watkins never far behind in some close racing.
In Big-wheel 85cc only two-points separated the top two riders, who dominated the weekend.
Callum Beeken emerged on top ahead of James Hanscomb, who dropped points in race two.
Marshall Smith rode consistently to eventually snatch third ahead of James Hyett with Aaron Patstone only two-points behind on his return from injury.
Honours in Senior 125cc went to wildcard, Denny Rapson, as he topped the podium ahead of last-race winner Owen Woodhouse and Alex Needham.
Senior Open class top-dog Joe Cadwallander took the overall from fast-gating Corey Coombes, who was chased hard by Jamie Osbourne.
Adam Hill took the moto three win but finished one point off a top-five finish.
Next to the line were the big boys in AMX/ Open and the AMX wins were shared between-fast gating Lee Truman and Harry Linton.
With three wins under his belt on Saturday and two second places on Sunday, Truman took the overall by 16 points, with Linton – a faller in race two – second.
Just six points behind in third spot was the consistent Darren Webster.
Last to take to the track were the Veterans and Novices and in the Novice category four out of five race wins gave wildcard Jack Berry to spot from Stephen Redfern and Jack Smith.
The Veteran class saw Neil Griffiths scorch to five straight wins from Neil Thomas and John Gauntlett.
