Report: Portsmouth MXC
By TMX Archives on 3rd Mar 16
The Portsmouth club season kicked off at a very chilly Swanmore. With at great turnout of over 230 riders signed on it looks like its going to be a good season.
First out the gate were the VMX. It was very close between the top three, all changing places in each race and all taking a race victory, but it was to be Brad Apden taking the overall with 2-1-2 followed by Howard Stanfield going 3-2-1, closely followed by last year VMX champion Darren King going 1-3-3.
Next was the new MX2 group. The class was dominated by ex-club favourite Luke Blanchard who took all three race wins with Mitch young riding well to take second with 3-2-4, some excellent holeshots pushing him to the front early doors. A good last race earned Carl Turner third overall going 4-5-2.
The MX1 was a battle of consistency with the overall going to Jordan Carter taking a 1-2-2 closely followed by Luke Kennett who enjoyed a race win, going 2-1-3 . Jake Fry rounded out the top three scoring two thirds and a fourth.
A decent turnout in the Rookies class with a number of riders in contention for the overall win. Despite a nasty spill Olivier Cook bagged the win in race two to snatch away the overall victory from Lewis King London.
London took advantage of others mishaps in race one to secure the win, finishing off the day with a 3-4 to finish up second overall.
Liam Jones was set for a race win too, but sliding out at the bottom of the chalky hill denied him the first place, coming home in second in the opening moto. He ended the day in third overall.
The 85cc riders enjoyed their own races this week, with the bigger wheeled machines taking to the gate first.
Archie Hicks was unstoppable, storming straight into the lead in all three motos to secure the overall victory with ease. The race for second was a five-way battle, but Ben Watts managed to be more consistent and with two seconds and a third took the runner-up spot. Liam Gale rode at incredible speed around the final corner to narrowly miss a race win but ended the day in third overall.
The Small-wheels were next out, and a clean sweep of race wins went to Olly Davidson, a magnificent performance, leading from start to finish to comfortably bag the overall.
Jude Morris wasn't far behind, and consistently followed Davidson home to take the runner-up spot. After carnage at the start in the last race, Shea Wylie took advantage and found himself in front of the rest of the field, a brilliant third place rewarding him with third overall.
Rapid
The smaller riders were jam-packed on a the start gate, an awesome turn out in the 65cc class, but Larry Harper made light work of the slippery circuit, riding as if he was the only rider out there and netted three race wins and the overall.
Sonny Shipton made his debut for Portsmouth, and an outstanding performance rewarded him with second overall.
Powering his way into third in the final moto ended his day perfectly. Finley Evans looked comfortable and rapid in the runner up spot, but missing out on a straight set of second places, he had to settle for third overall.
The Autos were last out, frozen to the core on the start line, but the cold didn't stop them being super speedy around the track.
A number of passes were made at the front but it was to be Charlie Richmond who came away with the overall victory, going 1-1-1 to not only reward him with the overall win, but he also became the first Shaun Simpson Rider of the Meeting in 2016.
Carnage all over the track as riders went down like flies, but Noel Brooks kept a cool head and romped home in second place, going 3-4-2 to bag the runner up spot.
A great effort from Alfie Stevenson to improve on his opening sixth place saw him move into second spot in race two, and with a third in the final moto finished the day in third overall.
