Colunists

THE weigh-in on Sunday for the 2008 Scottish Six Days Trial was a day of two halves. Nice and dry in the morning and then wet and 'orrible for the afternoon parade! Some things never change.
First bike to be wheeled in was actually that of local rider Kevin Dignan for the scrutineering teams to test-out their paint and artists' equipment. These days, only the chassis and engine crankcases are marked with a circle of paint, into which the riding number is etched.
Apart from that, all riders have to do is provide a legible rear number plate (and carry a spare, at the request of the local police) and ensure that the machine is fitted with a USEABLE side-stand for secure parking in the parc ferme each evening. Needless to say, some riders turned up with a sidestand so duff that the bike, when parked, looked like it was a hopeless drunk.
A total of 276 riders left the start at Fort William on Monday morning which, with riders leaving the start singly, at one minute intervals, meant that the first man was away at 7.30am while last man on Monday, Talmag Clubman Jason Welland, was finally flagged away at 12:16pm.
It's a long day for the officials!
