JOE Maessen lead the large pack of quads into turnone at the start of the first quad race of 2007 with his team-mate,Leon Beda, second and Stefan Murphy bike the wrong way up against thefencing.

On lap two it all went wrong for Winrow: I wasgoing up the inside of a slower rider and just touched which swung meround and bit more then I would have liked. I hit a pile of tyresmarking the track. By the time I pulled the bike off them, I was almostat the back of the pack.''

But then things went from bad to worse for Winrow!Later in the race, and trying too hard, I hit a straw bail at theside of the track, stalling the engine.'' Net result, last place.

Meanwhile, Maessen was still in the lead andopening up a small gap over Beda, Lindsey Duke and Richard Tordoff, with last year's champion, John Mitchell, fifth.

Ten minutes into the race and things started to gowrong for Mitchell: A part of the silencer broke off and jammed inthe exhaust pipe and closed it up, so I lost most of the power till wecame in and modified it, by which time the leaders were well gone.''
