AFTER years of intense speculation regarding its future and numerous close calls, it appears that the GP of Namur is perilously close to disappearing for good.

Although only just recently confirmed byYouthstream as venue for the twelfth round of the 2008 MX1/ MX2 worldchampionship on August 3, word came out of Belgium over the pastweekend that the organising Namur MX Events committee of the GP hadpulled the event from the calendar.

Despite being under threat from environmental, health and safety and other such causes for many years, the decision topull the race seems to have come from Namur MX Events chairman, PierreChonquerez, who, at the age of 76, has decided that he is not willingand able to carry on with the enormous task of staging the race at theCitadel. It also seems that other members of the committee are not inthe position to continue with the project without him.

Although nothing has been confirmed byYouthstream, it does seem that the loss of Namur, at least for 2008, isa definite and the search has already begun for a replacement venue withinfamous former 500cc GP venue Lommel being the name banded about withmost conviction.
