Kev’s hard to beat
By Dick Law on 31st Aug 12

those of you who thought that Kevin Strijbos was a just a sand specialist, need to think again, after the likeable Belgian completely dominated round seven of the Maxxis British Motocross championship on the hard pack track at Langrish, Hampshire.
While KTM-mounted Strijbos was doing his thing in the MX1 class its was a
Monster Energy Yamaha fest in the MX2 class, as all three of their riders finished in the top four overall.
American ace Zach Osborne won, his Swiss team mate Arnaud Tonus claimed second and series leader and red-plate holder Mel Pocock nailed fourth, as Elliott Banks-Browne crashed the party by finishing third on his HM Plant KTM, tied on points with Pocock.
For once the weather forecast was wrong and the promised showers didn't turn up, making the hard-working Langrish club turn on the impressive track sprinkler system to keep the dust down.
Strijbos made his intentions clear from the very start of qualifying by setting the fastest time, but the on-form Jason Dougan was pushing him all the way and was just under two hundredths of a second behind.
And he turned the tables come Superpole, as Strijbos slumped to third.
Strijbos led the pack into turn one at the start of the first MX1 race, with Dougan and Jamie Law in his wheel tracks, as Dorron Coutts looped his Honda on the start line.
By the halfway stage, Simpson was in third and closing in on Dougan with Alfie Smith fourth, Martin Barr fifth and Law slipping down to sixth.
The likeable Gordon Crockard was revisiting the British championship on the injured Ray Rowson's LPE Kawasaki and holding seventh.
With two laps to go Simpson stole second from Dougan as Bass snatched fourth from Smith, which is how they finished.
Crockard was sixth, followed by Gert Krestinov and Law.
The start of race two was almost the same as the opener, with Strijbos getting his second holeshot of the day, from
Dougan and Simpson and Coutts making up for his first aborted start, in fourth.
But behind them all hell was breaking loose as Barr touched Coutts's rear wheel and took a trip over the bars, taking five or six of his fellow racers with him.
All excpet Barr got up, remounted and rejoined the race, as he was helped off to be checked-out by the first aid people, who found he was just bumped and bruised.
Dougan crashed out on lap two as Krestinov started to put pressure on Coutts and Smith and Law fought over sixth.
Things stayed the same to the end of the race as Strijbos notched up his second win, from Simpson, Krestinov and Coutts, with Smith getting the better of Law for fifth and Dougan coming home in ninth, after sitting 25th on the third lap.
Strijbos again led the pack into turn one at the start of the third and final MX1 race and was followed round the lap by Smith and Simpson, as Law and Dougan disputed fifth followed by Coutts and Krestinov.
Smith crashed out at the top of the hill on lap four, handing the task of trying to stay with Strijbos to Simpson, as Krestinov passed both Dougan and Law to finish a distant third to Strijbos and Simpson.
