WITH 13 British Sidecar Trials titles under his belt, a collection of 14 Manx Swords of State' decorating his walls, and at 47-years of age, Robin Luscombe, has called a halt on his sidecar trialling escapades after a chequered career spanning some 28 years. His records as British Sidecar champion and the amazing 14 winning rides in the sidecar class of the Manx Two-Day Trial will probably never be beaten.
It would have been Manx number 28 this year, but after great deliberation Luscy' withdrew his entry. But don't for one minute take this as exit Robin Luscombe stage left.
Robin is quite clear nothing new there that he is taking time out and may be back.
I don't want compete half-heartedly as that would only tarnish my very happy memories memories that are good ones.
If I can't live without sidecars, then I will be back. My son, Sam, now 17, will ride with Kevin Morley, as he has done for some months. I don't think Sam and I could ride as a team but one never knows. We would probably be in conflict!
I am not planning to sell my 300 Appleyard Montesa sidecar outfit. However, I would consider allowing an expert or intermediate solo rider to try riding a three-wheeler in an event. That could help to promote the sidecar trials scene.
It is a great sport, and the social side is one great bonus.''
Robin tells us that he will not be enter the Yeadon-Guiseley club's national Mel Harrison Sidecar Trial in September but he will be observing at the event in the correct manner!
I'd like to pass on my thanks to all the clubs who run sidecar events, specifically Andy Smith on the Isle of Man, for 27, great weekends on the Island.
In closing, can I thank Roy Cary, Malcolm Rathmell, Hamilton Yamaha, Sandiford's, and of course my major sponsor Colin Appleyard. Without their collective support it would have been difficult to achieve as much as I have,'' was Robin Luscombe's way of closing a memorable chapter in sidecar trialling.
His Appleyard Montesa is resting at his home and, on the last day of August, Robin reiterated his offer of lending his outfit to a suitably skilled soloist to get a taste of three-wheel trialling.
