ROUND six of the All Spares British Superquader Championship, at Lydd International Raceway, marked an appearance from a man who is presumed to be the oldest competitive Quad rider, possibly world-wide, and although Paddy Thorne is of retirement age he gave a real gutsy show of how to enjoy life while still giving those who are 50 years his junior a run for their money. Paddy finished second in the 450cc class in the final race. Mike Taylor and Gareth Thomas stayed at the front in all three motos down at the Southern-most circuit of the race calendar, though none of it came easy as the dirt section required watering to cut down on the dust as these super-quick quads swapped the demanding dirt for a very fast and twisty tarmac track.
Taylor led race one from start to finish, while Thomas had his second place snatched away during the penultimate lap by Craig Kilner, who had moved up steadily from sixth to take second at the flag.
Brian Rodwell, initially, was deposed from fifth to sixth, followed next by Sam Hodgson who was deposed from fourth to fifth and finally Matt Lawry from third to fourth, as Craig battled to make his mark at the front of the pack.
Taylor went on to claim three wins from round six despite Gareth Thomas leading the final encounter right until the final lap. Thomas also took some healthy points with two second places and a third. Matt Lawry was close behind with a fourth place finish in race one followed by two thirds.
The youngest of the Hodgson family, Sam, had an excellent day with two fourth place finishes and a fifth to net him seven more points than his older brother Joe.
Brian Rodwell posted two excellent fifth place finishes on the day.
Craig Kilner, who had an excellent start to his day, suffered a spectacular high side which resulted in a number of cartwheels for man and machine.
Craig left the circuit to have some expert attention to his shoulder and collar bone. He still managed to re-appear later in the evening back at the Herons Bar to enjoy a relaxing evening. Everyone wishes him a speedy recovery with a little bit of luck he can maintain his championship lead.
With a few weeks rest over the summer, Craig may well be back on form for the seventh round of the series, scheduled at the Three Sisters Circuit on September 5/6.
