A fortnight ago at Jin in the Czech Republic Conrad Mewse wrapped up the 85cc Junior World Championship.

Last weekend the 14-year-old from Shepton Mallet added the European title at Matterley Basin, and TMX took the opportunity to chat with our latest hero.

TMX: How did you get into the sport?
Conrad: My dad used to ride, then when I was little he got me into it and I've loved it ever since. I started riding when I was three and racing when I was six.

TMX: You were four times British champion in the 65s, but this is your first race in the UK this year. Why?
Conrad: We went to race the Dutch championship to get better competition; the standard of riding is really high there.

TMX: With success, we believe?
Conrad: I lost the last round after winning all the rest, and I also lost one moto in the European qualifiers when I had trouble with my goggles.

TMX: You were second in each moto at the World 85, but you took the overall.
Conrad: The competition in the World Junior was really tough, but I rode consistently and stayed on. The top five were all really fast and the track was slick.

TMX: Who helps you out?
Conrad: Framptons Transport, Grizzly, Austen Trading, KTM UK, Fox and Justin Morris. Boris has trained me really well for seven or eight years now.

TMX (to Justin Morris): Boris, what first attracted your attention to Conrad?
Boris:  It's very rare to see a 65 rider with a nice posture and I tend to look first at the way they ride the bike rather than the speed. As soon as I saw Conrad his feet were in the right place, his hands were in the right place ... and he was fast as well!

TMX: You move to the 125s next year, how big are you ?
Conrad: Five-foot-seven, eight and a half stone. I've had a 125 to practice with all year, but I didn't ride it for a few weeks to make sure I got it all right at the World Juniors. And I don't feel that small on it, so all perfect so far.
