Colunists

LAST Wednesday, June 25, the West of England MC brought evening motocross back to the South West with the 58th running of the Patchquick Trophy, back on the calendar after a lapse of four-years. Entries had been a bit slow but there were several last minute entries, all after the big cash prize and their name on the famous trophy.
Water had to be used early on in the day to control possible problems with dust, and it worked a treat, as the track produced some fast and exiting racing for the near 1,000 spectators who were in attendance.
In the Patchquick Trophy races, Jordan Rose a recent convert to the STR Honda team led the first moto from the start and pulled clear.
Shane Carless was in second, but he was being pushed by 2004 Patchquick winner, Jonathan Pettitt, who was piling the pressure on him. By the end of lap four, Jason Dougan had joined this scrap.
It turned into a real tussle for several laps and caused all three riders to close on race leader, Rose.
Pettitt tried to pass Carless on lap ten, but ended up stalling his bike at the tight turn so Dougan eased through to third.
Carless was soon right up with Rose and was looking to get pass on lap 11, of the 13 lap race.
However, Rose used all his experience and held on to take the win.
Again, in the second moto, Rose had the best start, but there was plenty of local cheering as David Yelland was in second spot. There were a few fallers after the first bend and right at the back of the field was Dougan who had collided with Nick Life and had gone down.
Yelland was on a mission in this race and was right with Rose, not letting him get away and was ready to pounce on any opportunity.
Unfortunately, for Yelland, he had to pull over on lap three to remove a stone which had lodged in his back brake.
Rose eased away to take his second win of the day, and again Carless took second after a mid-race battle with Pettitt, who again had made a mistake which let Carless through after five laps.
In moto three local rider, John May, had the best start ahead of Bryan MacKenzie, with Rose in third.
Carless who was the biggest threat to Rose in the battle for the Patchquick Trophy, had a terrible start and was back in ninth at the end of the first lap Dougan also right at the back again.
May and MacKenzie pulled away at the front and had their own tussle until lap five when MacKenzie got the upper hand down Deer Park Hill and took the lead.
Pettitt caught Rose on lap seven, and they quickly closed in on May. They both passed May on lap ten, but they weren't going to catch MacKenzie, who took the win. Rose finished second and with it, he secured the overall on the day, much to his delight.
In Junior A, there was a good battle in the first race for several laps between Ryan Blee who had the holeshot and Scott Ardren. The pair were really close until lap six when Ardren overtook, passing Blee on the Veranda section. From there on Ardren was untroubled and took the win.
There was no stopping Brett Wheeler in race two. He had the holeshot and literally raced away to take a comfortable win.
