Winrow is king of the Culham fields
By Dick Law on 9th Nov 07
PAUL Winrow was in a class of his own as he powered his Winrow Racing Honda to a comfortable win at last weekend's eighth and final round of the British Quad Endurance Championship at Culham Moto Park, Oxfordshire.
However, Winrow may have won the battle, but SteveAtkins won the war on his 450 ARK Honda and in so doing retains thechampionship he claimed last year.
There was an air of disappointment around themisty paddock area on Sunday morning as the land the track wasoriginally scheduled to use was double booked and the club onlydiscovered this fact on Thursday morning.
A choice had to be made, cancel the event and have the season come to an anticlimax - or find a new location.
Time had almost run out when the decision was madeto move the event just over the railway line to the Britishchampionship motocross course.
By using parts of the motocross track and the areaaround it, a course of a reasonable length was devised, albeit not aslong as one would have hoped, but a track none the less, and the eventwas a goer.
Winrow was in no mood to mess about and got theholeshot at the start of the three-hour marathon event with Chris Cookand Atkins in his wheel tracks.
All Atkins had to do to retain the championshipwas to finish in the top 14 and stay out of trouble, but that was goingto be hard on the relatively short course with all those riders outthere overtaking.
At the end of the first lap, Chris Cooper wasbehind Winrow and pushing him all the way as a gap had already openedup on third placed Cook, with David Baldwin and Atkins filling the nexttwo places.
