Steve Holcombe carries a 40-point lead into the eighth round of the 2017 EnduroGP World Championship this weekend.
The Beta-riding Brit, last years Enduro3 world champion, has taken 11 podium finishes this season with wins in Italy, Greece, Portugal and Great Britain and heads to Germany for the final round needing just a handful of points on the opening day to secure the title.
I guess this is the big one, he says. With a 40-point lead I cant pretend that I dont have one hand on this championship because clearly I do but Im certainly not complacent about my position.
This is a hugely important moment in my career. Its going to be a tough event this weekend I need to focus on what I need to do and try and enjoy it. Im really looking forward to it, it should be cool with lots of excitement in all classes.
At round seven at Hawkstone Park last month Holcombe extended his lead over Frances Loic Larrieu. Nathan Watson sits third a further 13 points adrift but with a maximum of 50 points up for grabs over the weekend the British rider is out of the championship chase.
Since the British GP Ive been keeping on top of my fitness but not overdoing things on my enduro bike, added Holcombe. Theres been a lot of cycling and I feel really good.
Leading the championship, its a strange situation to be in but its one Ive worked hard to be in so Im just looking forward to racing in Germany. This final round seemed to far away when I was training for the first race in Finland at the start of the year a lot has happened since then but Im just as hungry to win this title now as I was then.
