Team USA take early lead at ISDE
By Team TMX on 12th Oct 16
The 91st International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) got underway on Monday in Northern Spain with Team USA taking an early lead in the coveted World Trophy. Their strong start, ahead of Team Italy and Team United Kingdom signaled their intention to vault them back into the spotlight after controversial disqualifications spoiled their chances of taking the trophy in Slovakia in 2015.
Team USA made a bold start with KTM factory rider Kailub Russell, who topped the E2 class, ranked second overall in the provisional results. His teammate Taylor Robert was third overall and second in E2 on his KTM 350 EXC-F.
Other KTM factory riders to pick up a solid first day result were Nathan Watson (Team UK), sixth in E1 with the KTM 250 EXC-F, and Ivan Cervantes (Team Spain), who was fourth in E2. The host country is currently fourth in the world Trophy after Day 1.
Sweden topped the rankings in the Junior World Trophy, followed by Italy, Spain and USA (with KTM riders Steward and Grant Baylor), and Maria Frank (Team Germany) and Laia Sanz(Team Spain) were 2-3 in the women's class.
Team Australia, the 2015 World Trophy winners took an early hit on day one when one of their key riders, Josh Strang, had to retire with a suspected fractured ankle. As the rules define that the results of all four team members in the World Trophy category count for the competition, this makes it an uphill struggle for last year's World Trophy winners.
Day 1 of competition presented dry and dusty trails and rather straightforward tests, which are designed to suit riders from the professional to club category. This year 22 nations are contesting the World Trophy and 19 nations are running a team for the World Junior Trophy. France has no World Trophy team in 2016 as a result of the disqualifications in 2015.
The ISDE is a celebration of Enduro sport open to teams and club riders from all over the world. It is the oldest competition on the FIM (International Motorcycle Federation) calendar.
