THE eyes of the motocross world will be on Angel Stadium, Anaheim, this coming Saturday night as the richest, most spectacular, and competitive series on the planet, the AMA Supercross Championship, begins a new era in earnest at the Southern Californian stadium.

After a decade of near monopolisation of the championship title by the incomparable Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael, the opening round of the 2007 season marks the first time that neither rider will line-up and chase the title, and with Carmichael running only a limited and as yet unconfirmed schedule on his farewell tour, although it looks likely that he will be on the gate tomorrow night, the race will be well and truly on to crown the next giant of supercross racing.

Recent history and form would suggest that the championship will eventually fall into the hands of either James Stewart or Chad Reed, but nothing is set in stone and with the severity of the tracks, a strong cast of fellow contenders, not to mention a punishing schedule of 16 rounds in 17 weeks for the elite of the AMA, neither Stewart or Reed can afford to be anything but outstanding all season if they want to take the biggest prize in American off-road.

Ricky Carmichael's announcement that he will race only a select few supercross rounds on the 2007 calendar as he focuses his attentions on a new career in Nascar racing came as a surprise to no-one, what remains to be seen from Anaheim 1 tomorrow night onwards is who will step up to fill his shoes as the 2007 AMA Supercross champion.
