Kawasaki has taken a decisive step forward with the launch of the 2026 KX85, giving its hugely popular junior motocrosser a comprehensive overhaul aimed squarely at one thing - winning races.

While the proven two-stroke engine remains at the heart of the package, Kawasaki’s engineers have adopted a fresh approach for 2026, focusing on chassis rigidity, suspension performance, braking power and rider ergonomics. The result is an all-new specification KX85, available once again in standard and big wheel (KX85 L) form, with genuine podium potential straight out of the crate.

The most significant changes are found at the front end. For 2026, the KX85 is equipped with a new, larger 43 mm inverted fork, featuring low-friction Kashima coating and increased rigidity. Crucially, rebound damping adjustability has been added to complement the existing compression adjuster, allowing riders and parents to fine-tune suspension performance with far greater precision.

Braking performance has also taken a clear step forward. A larger 240 mm front disc is now fitted, working with the same caliper body and master cylinder used on the full-size KX250. The upgrade delivers stronger, more controllable braking with improved durability. At the rear, a larger 220 mm disc and reduced pedal play contribute to improved feel and consistency.

Traction and control are further enhanced by the fitment of Dunlop Geomax MX34 tyres, which bring improved braking grip, cornering stability and front-end feel across a range of track conditions.

At the rear of the bike, Kawasaki has introduced a new fully adjustable shock absorber, featuring a larger 14 mm rod (up from 12.5 mm) and an extended cylinder length. These changes deliver firmer damping characteristics and improved bottoming resistance. On the big wheel KX85 L, a revised linkage now provides 305 mm of rear wheel travel, matching figures seen on Kawasaki’s full-size KX models.

The KX85’s much-praised perimeter frame hasn’t been left untouched either. A 25 mm extension to the steering head pipe increases front-end rigidity and overall composure, while weight-saving aluminium components are now used for the handlebars, steering stem and rear sprocket.

Rider ergonomics have been refined through Kawasaki’s ERGO-FIT system, with a new upper triple clamp offering four handlebar positions via reversible mounts - 10mm forward, standard, 10mm back and 20 mm back. Two height options are also available using collars, giving young riders a total of eight possible riding positions to tailor the bike to their size and riding style.

Visually, the 2026 KX85 receives a sharper, more aggressive look, with a new angular front fender, number board and fork shrouds bringing the junior machine firmly in line with Kawasaki’s factory race bikes. ODI Lock-On grips, Renthal fat bars, flatter and wider 48 mm footpegs with increased tooth count, black wheel rims and green alumite suspension adjusters complete the factory racer aesthetic.

With extensive updates to suspension, braking, chassis and ergonomics, Kawasaki has clearly raised the bar in the competitive 85cc class. Redefined and built to win, the 2026 KX85 range arrives genuinely race-ready.

The KX85 L (big wheel) will retail at £4,749, with the standard KX85 priced at £4,649. UK arrivals are expected from spring 2026.
