A Godwin for Jordan

CONNOR Walkley took round one of the Pirelli BSMA Best of British Series by storm as he won, with relative ease, all five of his Senior class championship races over the weekend. This round, hosted by the Ringwood club was the first of a six round series and started at a windy Matchams Park, Hampshire, where club member, marshals, riders and spectators were regularly caught out in the rain and hail showers that made life a little unpleasant.
Six groups all got in five races over the weekend, with riders being able to drop four of there worse scores at the end of the year when all the points are tallied.
Walkley was never out of the lead as he was first to cross the finish line for each lap of each race to score the maximum number of points available 225. Second overall, Oliver Rusby was never out of the top three till the last wet race where he finished eighth, while third overall Jackson Evans had a disaster in his third race, carried over to Sunday morning from Saturday, when he crashed while with the front runners and ended up almost last and a lap down.
Fourth placed Conner Pearce seemed to get better and better as the weekend went on, as he finished eighth in race one, but was fourth in his three races on Sunday.
It was hard at the front of the Big-wheel 85cc championship with Luke Dean and Matthew Bayliss sharing the wins. But while Bayliss was never out of the top three, Dean missed his fourth race altogether and slipped down to seventh overall. James Dunn followed Dean home in leg one, and by placing in the top five for the rest of the weekend, gained second overall in a very competitive field. Aaron Pippon finished all of his races in the top five so that gave him third overall, just one point ahead of Josh Brine.
Jordan Godwin seemed to like the dryer track in the Small-wheel 85cc class as he won his first three races, but as the conditions got wetter, Liam Garland snatched the last two moto wins. Garland's chances of getting the overall result was dashed in the very first race when he crashed after just three laps and failed to finish, ending the weekend in eighth overall. Liam Knight finished in the top five in four out of his five motos, and even with a 12th place finish in the other races, he still managed second overall. Jay Thomas spoilt his chances of second overall when he finished his last race down in 11th, but still hung on to third overall just in front of Ricky Roderick. Joe Jeffries, Jack Wilson and Josh Gilbert were the ones to do the winning in the Junior class, with Jeffries and Wilson getting two apiece and Gilbert the other. Jack Seaborne saved his best ride of the weekend to the last race where he was second, behind Gilbert but a DNF on Saturday dropped him down to 15th overall.
In the AMX class it was the Dominic Foreman and Steve Bixby show as the fast duo traded first and second places in every race. Foreman, with three wins, got the overall and finished the weekend 11 points clear of Bixby. Matt Gardiner was never out of the top five and ended the day in third place overall, with a hard fighting Ricky Lethaby fourth.
In the Adult Open class, Alan Pearce and Sebastian Osborne shared the moto wins with Pearce getting the overall verdict with three wins as this fast pair ended the weekend just two points apart going into round two.
Rob Lewis, with three third places, a fourth and a fifth was third overall, with Anthony James fourth.
Round two of the championship, on May 17/18, travels to Wakes Colne and is hosted by the friendly East Anglia club.
