A Max for Nagl and Musquin

MARVIN Musquin led a French domination of MX2, but it was Max Nagl for Deutschland who landed the big prize at Ernee on Sunday to march right into contention for the MX1 world title. On a heavily rutted track, dampened time and again as showers and sunshine followed each other in rapid succession, there was incident aplenty with the depleted UK squad right in the thick of it as a CCM led a GP for the first time in 32 years when Tom Church powered past Nagl from his outside gate to lead for half a lap in race two.
Both TC and Jason Dougan deservedly grabbed a top ten finish, Billy MacKenzie rebounded in race two for another 5th, and cousin Bryan grabbed points second time out.
In MX2 KTM UK had a wretched day, but Mel Pocock finally broke his duck in race one, and was so delighted he nearly quadrupled his series score in race two!

THE long hot spell had to end, and it did at precisely ten past noon as the MX2 race burst from the gate.
Musquin had declared after his win in the Saturday qualifier that he hoped it would stay dry, but the change of weather made little difference.
He simply checked-out twice, and the first race was almost a shut-out for the French; the only visitor to break top nine was Arnaud Tonus, who lives a mile from the frontier in Switzerland and contests the French national series.
Stephen Sword's race was over almost as quickly as it had begun: "My tear-offs broke and I had to throw away my goggles. The only place to try a pass was the inside, the front wheel slid out and that was that.”
With Jake Nicholls leaving turn one almost last, UK hopes rested with Pocock and how he responded,19th at the chequered flag, he was beaming: "What can I say? My heartbeat was running 200 mph on the last lap, particularly after I went wide into the soft stuff at the turn after the start.” Just a reminder; Mel hit a bank 50 yards from the finish at Valkenswaard in April when apparantly on the way to his first score.
And it just kept getting better with a forward-moving 13th in race two. Having travelled to the race light in a Sprinter with Ben and Zane, the boys must be hoping Steve Dixon stays home again in future!
The other kid to rock the French in race two was Ken Roczen. The 15 year old got planted on the ground at turn one in the opener, but hit back with runner-up in the second moto to maintain his 30 point average per GP and move into the world top ten despite only contesting half of the series so far. "I tried to stay with Musquin, but he was just too fast,” he smiled, "but it will come!”
Nicholls again gated miserably, and Sword was in and out of the points until he jumped off the side of the track.

NAGL is clearly the man of the moment in MX1. He had looked comfortable as he chased home Clement Desalle in the Saturday quali and never looked back in either race. "It was just a great weekend. I like this type of track when the deep ruts come out after the rain. It was easy to make a mistake, but after last week at Mallory I was determined not to throw it away again. I couldn't see properly after I got water behind my roll-off strip in race one, but the only problem I had was when Jason Dougan ignored the blue flags for nearly a lap.
"In the second moto I got back past Tom Church already on the first lap and pushed hard for ten minutes; after that I had a big lead and was completely in control.”
It was pretty much follow-my-leader in Nagl's wake in race one, though Billy MacKenzie wasted a decent start by spinning out on the first lap. After scything his way back to 14th, the Scot was understandably livid with himself when he went down again at the final turn and rolled home 19th.
Cousin Bryan frustratingly missed the points by one place: "I started midpack and we were all queueing up to filter into this single rut turn when Aranda T-boned me from behind. "
Tom Church, who had come home tenth in race one, even pressurising Toni Cairoli for half the race before falling, sensationally leapt under Nagl at the table top after turn one in a sun-blessed second encounter to lead for half a lap.
If memory serves correctly, it is the first time CCM have led a GP since John Banks at Farleigh in 1977.
TC owned up to the secret behind his electric gating: "I was really fired-up after breaking a chain yesterday, and that meant I was last to the gate. There wasn't a full line-up so I started away from the rest and gave myself a clear run into ther first turn. "
Of course it couldn't last and TC eventually came home 13th, but team-mate Jason Dougan truly got the bit between his teeth. Doogie had already shown pace in race one, running top five lap times after losing nearly a lap on lap one when he crashed over the big triple, but in race two it was the Phoenix Tools CCM which broke top ten at the chequered flag.
Billy Mac also escaped incident in race two, holding second for half of the moto before Cairoli, Leok and Philippaerts came charging past, and Bry Mac got reward for persistence from a lowly 25th on lap one.
As at Mallory last week champion Philippaerts was phenomenally fast, his second on the day coming despite two crashes in race two and a nasty incident in race one when he jumped off the track negotiating a lapper and landed on a flagman.
Cairoli was relieved to salvage a podium: "I still have much to learn about riding an MX1 bike in deep ruts. and it was really rough today!”
Wretched luck for Ken De Dycker; third in race one and headed for second in race two, the big guy broke a footrest off his Suzuki !
