You can't keep Ken Roczen down
By Sean Lawless on 1st Jun 18
Ken Roczen was sporting a K-Rex bum patch at Glen Helen at the weekend, a joking reference to the arm injuries hes sustained over the last two seasons.
The good news for fans of the German is that hes feeling healed up and showed good speed, even if his endurance hasnt fully returned yet.
Back-to-back injuries are never fun but after I got hurt with this right hand the time that I had [off] actually healed my left arm a little bit more, he said. This kind of injury can [take] up to one or two years. All the tissue is starting to calm down and my left hand as of right now actually feels like nothing ever happened. Thats phenomenal.
The result is one thing but there are always certain things that are out of your hands which is what happened in the second moto. Still, leading for over 20 minutes in the first moto was good, especially for only our third moto back.
I just tried to keep a steady and calm mood. Unfortunately, I wasnt able to hold Eli [Tomac] off, then Marvin [Musquin] got by me too. I tried to make a last-minute attack but got messed up by lappers so I really just settled into third which we were all happy with.
The second moto I got another good start but heard a noise and wasnt ready to just send it over any of the big jumps when there might be a problem so I went into the pit lane. It ended up that there was a rock in my front sprocket area but better safe than sorry.
After that we made it all the way up to eighth place which is pretty sweet. Weve been working really hard and its unfortunate because I think today we couldve been on the podium. We have a lot of motos to go so its coming. Ive got to just keep building and I think well get there.
Eli Tomac, who followed Roczen for most of the first moto, is pleased his rival is making a solid comeback.
It was good to see him up there, said Tomac. The guys gone through basically hell so its good to see hes got that speed back. I had a battle with him for what felt like 20 minutes.
