With a few spaces still available in this years Maxxis ACU British MXY2 Championship, on the evidence of the HIMX youth races its going to be a fierce fight over the five scheduled rounds.
Hawkstone Park was the first chance to see how some of the contenders were shaping up after the off-season and eight out of Sunday's top 10 are on the entry list.
For 2017, which will be his last year in MXY2, Tom Grimshaw has moved up from a 125 two-stroke to a HCR/Putoline/Apico Yamaha 250F and the 15-year-old was in impressive form at Hawkstone.
"I feel strong,” he said. "It's a massive jump from an 85 to a 250 so the 125 was a great stepping stone for me.
"The 125 went okay and, obviously, I was against 250s then, so now I've gone 250 too, I think I should be up there looking for some top fives and maybe podiums – I'd be really happy with that.”
Racing an RMJ Academy Husqvarna UK 250F, 17-year-old Joe Cadwallader also looked strong after a punishing off-season.
"I've done a lot of training over the winter and have spent time in France and Spain getting the motos in,” he said. "My fitness is really good in the gym and training with the fast boys like Adam Sterry and Mickey Eccles has helped me to pick up my speed. They drag you on.
"I'd really like to be top three in the Maxxis MXY2 and definitely try to win some races. This will be my last year before I go MX2 so I need to make the most of it.”
The MXY2 championship shares the programme with five of this year's eight Maxxis rounds, kicking off at Culham on March 12.
