The second round of the ACU British Sidecarcross championship took place on April 27 at the Iron Works circuit in Middlesborough hosted by the Iveston & Satley club.

Although the track had been used for NETT championship races on Saturday it stood up well to the punishment and was in prime condition for Sunday’s racing.

After last week’s performance defending champions Brett Wilkinson/ Joe Millard were hoping to show the others how it should be done but the vastly experienced Stuart Brown and passenger Scott Grahame were certainly up for a fight.

In timed practice Wilkinson/ Millard set the fastest time over 1.5 seconds quicker than Brown/ Grahame with George and Jim Kinge third and Michael Hodges/ Ryan Henderson fourth.

When the gate dropped for the opening moto, Ulster crew Neil Campbell/ Paul Horton took the lead into turn one from Kinge/ Kinge and Brown/ Grahame tucked inside. Very quickly Wilkinson/ Millard had made their way to the front with Brown/ Grahame soon passing Campbell/ Horton to take over second place.

Brown/ Grahame tried to close the gap on Wilkinson/ Millard but weren’t able to while Campbell/ Horton came under attack from firstly Hodges/ Henderson and then the Kinge pairing. This was the order they finished in.

The second leg saw the Kinges and Campbell/ Horton side-by-side into turn one but Campell/ Horton drifted out wide and lost their place to Hodges/ Henderson and then Brown/ Grahame whilst Wilkinson/ Millars didn’t get off well and were back in fifth place.

Five minutes in and Brown/ Grahame were in the lead having just passed the Kinges whereas Wilkinson/ Millard had only just passed Campbell/ Horton and set off after Hodges/ Henderson and the early leaders. By half distance Wilkinson/ Millard were up to second place and for the next 15 minutes were in Brown/ Grahame’s wheel-tracks but try as they might, couldn’t get past and finally came home in second place just 0.2 seconds adrift.

So, Brown/ Grahame took the overall win but with the same points as Wilkinson/ Millard so the gap between them in first and second place in the championship remains the same.

Round three will take place at Canada Heights on June 1.
