Future West Promotions has announced that with immediate effect that the British Supercross Championship will now be sanctioned by the MC Federation (MCF).

According to Future West's John Hellam: "Recent legal proceedings have brought to light problems with the insurance provided by the Auto Cycle Union (ACU) to Future West. This has ultimately lead to the change of authorising body.”

With the switch in sanctioning authority also, unfortunately, comes news that the London round of the British SX series – scheduled for Wembley Arena on January 14 – has been cancelled.

"This will allow time for the transition of registered riders to receive refunds and re-enter the series through the MCF for the Birmingham event at the LG Arena on February 18,” explains Hellam.

"An incident, which occurred in 2008, has exposed some issues with the insurance coverage promised to Future West by the ACU. Future West has been left to defend itself against the claim with no help or cover from the ACU.

"It was clearly pointed out to us prior to the incident that all aspects of our Supercross events were covered under the insurance provided by the ACU from open to close of every event.”

Hellam continued: "The British Supercross Championship will now be completed under the auspices of the MCF. The MCF's Roy Barton was instrumental in the back office during his time with the ACU before moving over to the MCF, especially in relation to scheduling and rider organisation for our British SX series.

"Obviously we are extremely disappointed with the lack of support given to us by the ACU in regards to insurance cover and the obvious effects it has had on our business.

"The cancellation of an event is always hard to accept but in these tough economic times it is essential for us to ensure our future. We are happy to work with Matt Bates and the MCF as we obviously know Matt's pedigree,” explains Hellam.

The attention of Future West will now switch to the final round of the series at the newly refurbished LG Arena in Birmingham on February 18.

"The Birmingham event is selling extremely well and the racing is surely going to be intense as it is the final round of the series.”

In response Brian Higgins, chairman of the ACU, said: "Obviously the ACU is disappointed to lose Future West as a partner in the British Championship, but we have to make it clear that the reference Mr Hellam makes in his press release regarding lack of insurance is inaccurate.

"The ACU prides itself on good quality, all encompassing insurance for all of our organisers, some of which Future West Promotions has benefitted from in the past three seasons with injuries that have occurred trackside.

"Unfortunately, Mr Hellam refers to an incident in February 2008 in which we consider he chose to run outside of the ACU's recognised guidelines.

"The ACU trusts that the new arrangements will not inconvenience the riders more than necessary.”
