British Trials Championship Round 5

A trip across the Irish Sea for the fifth round of the British trials championship did little, if nothing to stem James Dabill's torrid domestic campaign, with the youngster from Leeds placing a disappointing fourth earlier today. Having only managed to finish one position higher than he recorded at last weekend's round, James now drops to fourth in the overall standings after being overtaken by rival Shaun Morris, who came home just ahead of Dabill in third spot today.

With most of the British mainland being hit by heavy rain throughout today, the event just south of the city of Belfast took place in dry conditions, with an overcast sky giving way to sunny spells at times. Looking a lot more confident than he had seven days earlier, Dabill arrived at section ten on the first lap for a loss of just two marks, but left five marks worse off as he begun a day long hate affair with this particular hazard.

This section would prove to be James total undoing as he recorded three maximums on his three visits, with him failing to master the large rock slab near to the ends cards at each attempt. This had been a similar story at the previous round, where two bogey hazards had destroyed what otherwise had been a good performance.

With ex World championship contender Robert Crawford acting as stand in minder for Dabill, the new pairing worked well in the remainder of the twelve sections that were ridden three times and featured loose limestone rock in the majority.

James will now enjoy a couple of weeks rest, before resuming his World championship campaign, which to date has brought him far more success this season than his domestic outings.

"You might think it is difficult or not right for me to say that I am happy, but compared to last week, I felt a lot more confident and overall I was a lot happier with the way I was riding.”

"However there is no way I can be happy with the result, as it is simply not good enough, but is pretty much par for me in the British championship this year. I think I was unlucky again, but I realise others may say something different.”
