Buzzin’ for the British

Riders are feeling it, promoters are feeling it, pundits are feeling it and even team managers are admitting it – there is a distinct buzz surrounding the British Motocross in 2023.
For the first time since the inception of the Michelin MX Nationals, who named themselves as a British Motocross Championship almost to directly confront the problems with the official ACU version, there is a sense of coordination between themselves and RHL, the promoters of that official series with its title sponsor Revo.
Photos have spread of handshakes between Gareth Hockey (head of RHL) and Paul Irwin (the brains behind the MX Nationals) so that they will no longer clash dates and are also beginning to share the spoils of each other’s work.
So the new MOD land found for last year’s Nationals finale at Oxford Park will now also be used in the Revo series as was the similarly-sourced brand-new patch at Oakhanger in Hampshire which hosted the first rounds of both championships back in March.
The Michelin series tackles another new venue for its second round, the so-called Monster Mountain in its first visit to RHL’s backyard in South Wales. The track itself is to be built in a former quarry – a bloody big one according to their website.
The only hint of negativity is RHL’s moving of the seventh round away from Whitby and forward in time to run on the same weekend as the World Supercross opener in Birmingham. Subject to ACU Approval it is to be held at Schoolhouse MX near Durham, so still plenty northern enough.
The final three rounds of the Revo series are two-day affairs with two extra classes of youth races which will have to be qualified for plus the three-round Women’s Championship adding to those occasions.
