Cairoli was De MX1 Max man!
By TMX Archives on 17th Dec 09

IF there was a question at the start of the season as to whether or not Toni Cairoli could be competitive week-in, week-out on a 450, it had certainly been answered by the end of the summer. The two-times World MX2 title holder not only added the MX1 crown to his CV, he also topped every positive statistic going bar one, and he only lost out on that in the final moto of the campaign when it was of no significance.
Just glance at the stats table and you will see that the 24-year-old Sicilian won the most GPs, the most motos, had the most podiums, and finished motos top three and top six more often than anyone else. The only indicator where he didn't top the list was the number of top ten moto finishes. His injury-wrecked 12th in the final moto in Brazil left him one short of a maximum, but the only man to manage the feat was Josh Coppins.
Observers had never doubted that Toni would win races in his first full MX1 campaign – he had already won his only previous GP in the class at Donington in 2007 – but few felt he would be able to show the consistency required to win the title. As already indicated, how they were proved wrong!
Having said that, there was a clear hierarchy in the class of kings. Take away Seb Pourcel, running hurt from the word go, and the mid-summer injury victims Jonathan Barragan and Steve Ramon, and the series was left with seven potential winners.
