Motocross

This year's Nostalgia Scramble marked 40 years of CCM marque and the man behind these legendary machines, Alan Clews, was in attendance to witness a day packed with close racing on a perfect track in front of a big crowd.

There were over 60 of the  Bolton Bangers either being raced or on display and the CCM-only races provided some of the day's best entertainment. Scott Maxwell took the Pre-75 CCM class in tremendous style on a 616cc machine built by his dad, Joe Maxwell, from local man Keith Barnes on the Mark Cook built Clews-Stroka, the original of which was the forerunner of CCM and ridden by Keith's Dad Mike in 1971.

Lewis Bell from Edinburgh put in a stylish ride to  come home in third place. In the Pre-81 CCM class Vincenc Brunner from Germany stormed through for the win ahead of Italy's Alessio Solda and  tough Scot Paul Chiappa, riding injured on Ian Charlton's 4-valve 1979 model.

The picturesque natural bowl at Holme Farm, Middleton near Sedbergh, Cumbria, was once again the perfect setting for this classic meeting which attracted some 400 competitors and in the main programme of events the heavyweight Pre-60 Class was dominated by Triumph engined BSA machines and in particular Bill Bourne, from Market Drayton, who took three race

wins from the entertaining Andy Carter with a battling Simon Chell in third. Chris Collins just beat Carl Woollaston in all three races for the Pre-65 up to 350cc win with Mick Beech  missing his usual fast starts in third.

Tim Dallaway on the ex Roger Neale Triumph Metisse was beaten by the 500 Jawa of Paul Evans in the first leg of the Pre-65 over 350cc class but turned the tables in the next two to take the win. Another Triumph Metisse, with Liston Bell on board, took third with Nostalgia favourite Tim Manton riding injured in fifth, just behind the rare 360cc Twin port CZ of Rupert Copping.

It was Tim Dallaway again in the Pre-70s but this time on his orange - to match his helmet -500 BSA. His main challenger Carl Pope won the second race after being second to Tim in race one but being unplaced in race three spoilt his chances. John Cash showed flashes of real speed but it was left to Phil Roberts on his 380cc  CZ to take second overall with three consistent third place finishes.

As expected Chris Storey stormed to three wins in the Pre-75 up to 250cc class on his screaming Honda stroker but Billy Chisholm gave it everything on his Husky to finish runner-up while a non placing in race two stopped Derk Macauley on his Bulto from mounting a real challenge but he did get close to Storey at times.

The Clews Stroka gave Keith Barnes the win in the Pre-75 over 250cc class from the formidable Wayne Partington on his yellow 380 CZ while local man Kris Winder came home third on another 380 CZ. Big Carl Hodgson, on his 440 Maico, fought off some strong challenges in the Pre-78 class from Scots Ian Roberston and Grant McClure, but the fastest man on track was often John Iddon, from Preston, on a 250 CZ. However inconsistent finishes cost him dearly although he did win race two.

TheTwin-shock Bandits and Pirates races provided plenty of fireworks as usual with some tremendous battles in the Bandits between Maurice Wharton, Vic Allan and Chris Cannon but Maurice faded slightly in each race and Vic Allan got bad starts in the first two races leaving local rider Chris Cannon, on a RM250 Suzuki, to take a great overall win.

However, in the last race Vic got the start and controlled the race from the front, punching the air with sheer delight as he crossed the line to take the win.

The Pirates Class was a battle between two  top AMCA sparring partners from the 1980s, Gary Parker and Mark Fulton but although he looked fearsomely quick, bad starts and a crash in the third race hindered Mark and Gary was out of the gate and away from the field before much could be done about it. Behind them came the three tough Scots -- Smith, Bickmore and Chiappa but Martin Perrett on his glorious Triumph twin did get amongst them at times.

Gary's brother Jem beat Tony Barnes and Craig Holmes in the Intermediate Class.

In the final race of the day, David Myers, Grandson of legendary local rider Zeke Myers of Flying Saucer fame, beat the handicap system and simply cleared off at a great rate of knots on Norman Barrow's CCM, leaving the star riders struggling to get a crack at him by the time they'd got through the rest of the field.

A truly unforgettable Nostalgia Scramble ended with Guest of Honour, and fittingly former works CCM star Norman Barrow, handing out the prizes at a packed Awards Presentation including Man of Meeting to Vincenc Brunner who had come all the way from Berlin just to be at this wonderful CCM themed gathering as well as to take a brilliant win in the Pre-1981 class races for these most famous and historic machines.
