Dabill's knocking on Wood
By TMX Archives on 1st Apr 09

JAMES Dabill claimed the Premier in the National Jack Wood Trophy on Sunday with just four dabs in 50 sections which meant 46 cleans, but not all ten final subs up River Kwai.
The ever-present sting in the Jack Wood took marks from every rider but Dan Thorpe who cleaned the entire group in a final bid to close down Dibs who dropped half his marks in the historic Kwai. Dabill was riding up a gear from the rest of the star-studded field riding 27 sections without fault. It was only when he got to Hoyles Gully that a boot went down but no-one apart from the observer and competitors witnessed it as the entire group was under strict no-spectator rules.
The Clubman course also yielded low scores and builder Daz Wasley was more than happy with his 14-mark winning score over Mick Boam and Bemrose winner Paul Bennett. Daz clocked 42 cleans.
Hillsborough Motor Club ran the show in bright spring sunshine but it did not penetrate the upper reaches of Fletchers where the first five sections tracked the valley. Chris Pearson, Dan Thorpe, Craig Robinson and Ian Austermuhle opened their accounts in the fourth and fifth sections. Wood debutante Jonathan Richardson was caught in the peaty soil at the second sub while Boyd Webster undercooked the steep climb that was the first sub while local ace Anthony Cook halted with Tom Hick in the second section.
When 2009 Clubman winner Mick Boam fived the second beck sub at TCC Darren Wasley got on his bike and went, with a dab in the top sub at the same group, through Ughill, then the slippery beck at Buckleys before taking a two and a dab in Hoyles Gully. The sun was hitting the first sub where Hilda and Rupert Ellison were sunbathing and marking the slack dabs on the steep climbing section. The rocks were dry and the in between grassy bits affording good grip but Richard Timperley, Tony Scarlett and Grant Morris located some slippery parts.
