Davy’s Highland king

Sheffields Davy Morewood was a popular winner of the 2012 Pre-65 Scottish Two-Day Trial staged, as usual, in Kinlochleven, deep in the Highlands, last Friday and Saturday.

Davy, of the famous Morewood trials family – father Alan and mum Merle were British Trials Sidecar champions – enjoyed the perfect trial to finish his two days and 60 sections with no loss of marks, on his well-prepped 500 Ariel.

By keeping his feet firmly on the pegs Davy held off a strong challenge from similarly-mounted James ‘Bobble' Noble and popular regular Catalan visitor Carles Casas, riding Walter Dalton's Tiger Cub.

These three aces ended the trial in exactly the same positions they finished on the opening day, proving their consistency.

The trial took place in excellent conditions for riding with mainly dry weather and sections dry under foot.

It was a surprise to many just how dry the hills were, with no water whatsoever in many of the gullies. This actually makes conditions in the sections harder though, as the rocks and stones are very loose, with no moisture to bind them together.

Saturday's action took place over two ‘loops' – firstly the spur down the ‘left hand' side of Loch Leven, when viewed from Kinlochleven, taking in old favourites Cnoc A Linnhe, Caolasnacoan and spectator favourite Camas Na Muic, on the lower side of the road on the return leg.

Then it was the true loop out on the moors to the north west of the village sweeping out to Loch Eilde and taking in a bunch of sections before a meandering loop back. With riders fresh and eager there were more than 20 competitors managing to retain single figure scores on Friday, including Aberdeen's Duncan Mitchell, riding his late dad's BSA.

"That was with riding five sections without a clutch and the rest of the trial with a slipping clutch,” said Duncan, who went on to finish 37th.

"I like to think dad (Peter Mitchell) was watching and having a laugh at my expense!”

Another notable ride came from regular Irish visitor Mark Harries, who dropped four on his 500 Ariel.
