Dougie Lampkin failed even to make the start of the event proper today, when a nasty crash during the later part of the morning practice lap left him with a serious injury to his left hand. Lampkin was transported immediately to Airedale Hospital near to his home town of Silsden, where the full extent of the injury became apparent, after he had initially suspected that he had just dislocated his left index finger.

An emergency x-ray revealed that Dougie had actually broken a bone on the top of his hand level with the wrist joint. The displaced bone had then in turn forced his left index finger into an over extended position.

Obviously in severe pain Lampkin was forced to suffer further as the doctor did his best to put the bone back into place. This was in an attempt to offer the ex multi World champion some temporary level of relief, prior to him going under the knife tomorrow morning.

Dougie will under go an operation at Airedale Hospital on Monday to have the broken bone pinned back into position in order to ensure that it heals correctly in the longer term. Lampkin has been allowed to return home overnight, with a temporaty cast roughly holding the bone back in line. Speaking from his Yorkshire base, the thirty-three year old did his best to be positive about the situation.

"Hopefully the doctor will be able to give me a better idea of the time I will need to recover after he has operated tomorrow. From my own point of view I know I have got just over a month to be in some kind of shape to ride at the next World round in Spain, so I will be asking him to do what ever is possible to allow that to happen."

"Nine times out of ten you get away with that kind of crash, but today it was not going to be. When the sump hit the step, I thought I could jump back off the bike safely, but in the end I ended up dragging the bike down with me. As soon as the bike started to come over the top of me I knew I was in trouble." Dougie explained.

"I am still in quite a lot of pain, but hopefully tomorrow will bring better news." Lampkin ended.

Dougie has confirmed that he will still attend and instruct at his annual Trials School during the later part of this week.
