Dunn and dusted

If brown happens to be your favourite colour or you have a liking for muddy situations this was definitely the event for you!
The opening round of the 2011 BYMX championship slithered into life at Brampton in Cumbria, after 17 hours of unrelenting rain, sleet and snow pre-event produced conditions that fully tested all concerned. Words and pictures: Mike Gurney & James Williams
At the end of the day however it was a job well sorted by the ACU and the local organising East Cumbria MX club.
To be fair only half of the course suffered badly and navigating the paddock area proved to be far trickier than most of the track itself!
In an effort to shift the top layer of gloop from the racing circuit the riders of the Youth Open division were first to the line.
All the 250cc four-stroke big guns arrived at Brampton with high expectations of drawing first blood in the 2011 season but were soon shot down in flames by a screaming two-stroke.
James Dunn, now on KTM after years with Suzuki, flew out of the traps on a shortened but difficult circuit and never looked back.
He won the opener and went on to accumulated enough points to take overall honours.
Nathan Watson and Ryan Houghton, both on HM Plant KTMs had first race nightmares with Watson charging from the back to eighth and Houghton losing a chain.
The pair then took the meeting by the scruff of the neck, with Houghton imperiously taking the next four race wins to claim third overall, Watson nabbing four podiums to secure second overall.
Behind the front three the action was extremely tight, as Jamie McCanney nabbed fourth by a single point from Jake Page.
Team Green star Jake Millward scored a fine sixth.
Two-stroke power was clearly the machinery of choice again in the Big Wheel 85cc class, with Liam Knight and Tom Neal showing the rest of the field the short way around the Low Gelt circuit.
Knight was in sparkling form as he gated well and scored three wins and two seconds for his first BYMX national win.
Tom Neal, recently back from racing in America, was also extremely fast as he carded two wins of his own and only gave up a shot at the overall due to a poor start in heat one.
Dunn and Neal look set for a great scrap for the championship.
Nathan Dixon gave a truly gutsy performance in third with a 4-12-6-4-13 finish – his card truly reflecting the tough nature of the weekend's racing.
