The Frenchman and Jorge Prado crossed the holeshot line neck and neck with KTM's Prado taking the lead holding off Febvre until the Spaniard suffered a mechanical issue with around six laps left in the moto. Prado pulled off the track for a DNF.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Thomas Olsen took the chequers in an impressive second place while Glenn Coldenhoff, making his debut for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, secured the third step on the podium.
On his Beta, Jeremy van Horebeek sealed the fastest lap of the Supercampione moto.
Jorge Prado delivered a pole position for his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team and took that form into the MX1 race. Acing the holey, the 20-year-old Spaniard eased his way to a wire-to-wire win in Riola Sardo. Although Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing's Romain Febvre pushed early in the moto, Prado looked smooth and in full control.
Febvre secured the fastest lap but a combination of some mistakes and the need to back off due to arm-pump meant the Frenchman would eventually finish in sixth place.
Thomas Olsen finished third in his MX1 debut, while Jeremy van Horebeek, racing on his new Beta for the first time, finished fourth. Another rider who will be pleased with his season-opening race is Swedish pilot Alvin Ostlund who rounded out the top five.
Maxime Renaux took pole position in the MX2 class at Riola Sardo but a crash left the Frenchman with a dislocated (right) shoulder. The shoulder was put back in place but he was not fit to race.
Nicholas Lapucci aced the MX2 start to take the holeshot and led for most of the race on his two-stroke Fantic. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's new signing for 2021, Mattia Guadagnini, followed behind but a spectacular off early in the moto dumped the highly-rated Italian into the Sardinian sand. Eventual winner Jago Geerts said after the race he was managing his pace as he suffered from arm-pump.
