Fast fight at the Broms

Following an incident packed second round of the 2010 AMCA MX Championships at Ross Falcon's MXC's event Bromsberrow, on Sunday, it's all change at the top of the title chase standings as Lee Payne and Phil Mercer now lead the respective MX1 and MX2 classes. For early Championship leaders Glen Phillips and Shane Holmes, Bromsberrow produced a set of varied results.

With Phillips suffering from flu, he posted a determined 4-5-5 scorecard in MX1 while Holmes was forced to switch to his spare 2009 machine after his number one MX2 Yamaha seriously tightened up during the early morning qualification session. In the overall standings on the day reigning MX1 champion Ben Saunders took top honours ahead of Payne, Brad O'Leary, Richard Cannings and Phillips.

Over in MX2, Mercer topped the podium from reigning champion Lee Dunham with Carl Benjamin taking a superb third overall courtesy of his best AMCA Championship finish to-date.

Up first on Sunday were the MX1 lads which saw Lee Payne make a supersonic start to lead the way with a host of riders in hot pursuit. While Parry and Richards gradually dropped out of contention Payne was setting a blistering pace at the front until suffering a big off.

Despite breaking both his clutch and front-brake levers he still bravely picked himself up but in the process he had lost his moto lead to Saunders and just three laps later was then further relegated by O'Leary. In a frantic finish to an exciting moto one O'Leary just failed by the narrowest of margins to snatch victory away from Saunders while Payne had to dig deep and repel a late challenge from Phillips.

Making amends for his big crash in the opener Payne was to stylishly lead the second MX1 clash from gate to flag  taking the win despite a determined effort from Saunders. After initially holding an early second spot Phillips dropped back to fifth behind Cannings and O'Leary. Turner again made a strong recovery in this moto, going from 18th back to 6th and finished just ahead of James Lane, Clinton Barrs, Crowder and Simon Lane.

In a restarted final MX1 moto O'Leary, Phillips and Payne all took turns to lead the way before Saunders took control on lap seven for the win. Earlier though it was O'Leary who had grabbed the holeshot before eventually having to settle for third. After a great ride in the opening round at Hawkstone, Cannings was again in fine form showing great speed to move from 17th back to fourth in this final moto.

After having suffered those afore mentioned engine problems in practice, early MX2 Championship leader Shane Holmes aboard a 2009 Yamaha gated in ninth spot in the opening Bromsberrow moto. On a dramatic first lap though, Paul Neale, Jack Taylor and reigning champion Lee Dunham all fell. While Neale was forced out after a particularly heavy tumble, Taylor and Dunham began their recoveries up the leaderboard. Meanwhile at the front Mark Hooley passed early leader Phil Mercer on lap two and there he remained all the way to the chequered flag to earn a valuable win. Mercer was to be eventually relegated back to third by a very determined Sean Frayne, but the rides of the moto surely belonged to Dunham and Taylor. While Dunham moved from 21st back to a great fourth, Taylor came back from 23rd spot to eventually finish in eighth.

In moto two Frayne, Powell and Hooley all suffered big tumbles on the rough tough Bromsberrow circuit as early leader Mercer was passed after just one lap by Dunham. In very determined mood, Dunham went on to win by nearly ten seconds ahead of Mercer while Benjamin had another great ride for third.

In the final MX2 clash Mercer led the way from Hooley, Dunham, Taylor, Frayne and Ben Brooks. Although Dunham blasted past Hooley on lap two it was Mercer who was still in control until a red flag incident on lap seven halted proceedings. Then in a totally separate incident on that same red flag lap, Hooley again crashed heavily and in the process dislocated his shoulder. However with the race having already reached the distance that a result can be declared the rules state that the standings will be as per a riders placing on the lap before the red flag. So therefore it was victory to Mercer from Dunham, Hooley, Frayne, Taylor, Benjamin, Williams, Brooks, Yarranton and Holmes.

Jack Bas and Sam Callow took the Non-Qualifiers moto wins at Bromsberrow with Bas also earning the overall victory from Daniel Talbot and Christopher Davies. In the supporting Expert races Ryan Harris and Andrew Watkins were to top the scoring charts.
