Great Scott's the Hawkstone Master
By TMX Archives on 11th Aug 10
It's many congratulations to Scott Elderfield, Aaron Lowe and Marc Roe after they wrapped up their respective Pro MX2, Michelin MX1 and Michelin MX2 titles during round six of the Wulfsport British Masters at Hawkstone Park.
While the above lads deservedly enjoyed the spoils of victory, the sport of motocross was also a major winner as a bumper 350 strong entry proved yet again what a popular series the Wulfsport Masters really is by catering for riders of all ages and abilities.
And on another weekend of dramatic action, the Kawasaki Masters class saw season long title contender Tom Watts unluckily crash out, leaving rival Zac Stealey now requiring just nine points to earn the crown.
Amateur MX1 leader Matthew Williamson is just three points short of confirming Masters championship glory.
Typical of the great Wulfsport Masters action at Hawkstone, Martin Barr, Brad Anderson and Elliott Banks-Browne produced a classic opening Pro MX2 battle disputing the lead with Shane Careless, as Scott Elderfield and Neville Bradshaw also gave chase.
After seven hot laps Anderson blasted into pole position, only to suffer a badly bent brake disc a circuit later, which enabled Barr to regain control.
However the race was then red-flagged due to a fallen rider so the result was counted back to positions on lap seven, handing the eventual victory to a surprised Anderson, ahead of Barr, Banks-Browne, Elderfield, Bradshaw and Careless.
After encountering problems with a trapped breather pipe on his LPE Kawasaki, Kristian Whatley climbed aboard team mate Lee Dunham's machine and came home in seventh after gating 18th.
After grabbing the holeshot Careless disappeared on the opening lap of Pro MX2 moto two and Banks-Browne quickly took control.
From then on the DB Honda rider controlled the race all the way to the chequered flag, finishing 11-seconds clear of runner-up Barr.
In another successful outing for the PAR Honda boys Anderson took third ahead of eventual title winner Elderfield.
Currently in fine form, young AMCA rider Jack Taylor stormed from 17th to finish a fine eighth, one place behind Matthew Moffat who now sits in second place in the Wulfsport Pro MX2 standings.
In an unpredictable Wulfsport Pro MX1 class James Noble, Ben Lamay and Scott Elderfield took the podium places after all finishing on 88 points apiece, but the Hawkstone moto wins went to Brad Anderson and Gert Krestinov.
Anderson was in great form in Pro MX1 race one, leading all the way to take victory nearly 14 seconds ahead of Martin Barr, with Elderfield third.
Having his last meeting in the UK before being forced to return to America and re-apply for a visa, Lamay was fourth with Proppa Honda riders Noble and Nathan Parker fifth and sixth.
Earlier in the clash Krestinov had held fourth before his Kawasaki started to seriously overheat. After quick work by his team technichans Gert was soon back on track, eventually finishing in 12th spot.
Following that moto one disappointment Krestinov quickly passed Elderfield before blasting to a superb victory in the second Pro MX1 clash, finishing nearly 29 seconds ahead of Noble, with Lamay in third.
With the track at its roughest Anderson had got up to fifth place before crashing out at the bottom of the main Hawkstone downhill section retiring from proceedings on lap four.
So with Anderson out and Krestinov encountering his earlier moto one problems it handed the overall victory to Noble, making that long journey from Whitby well worthwhile.
Due to a lengthy delay following an earlier crash in Pro MX2 and time restrictions there were only three Proppa.com MXY2 Masters races at Hawkstone, with the outstanding clash now to be included into the final round programme at Pontrilas.
In the Hawkstone action though James Dunn took the opener before Luke Norris was first past the flag in the remaining two motos.
Making his first appearance of the Masters season Luke Newman scored consistent 3/4/5 placings to earn the final podium step ahead of title contenders Dan Thornhill and Ryan Williams.
The Hawkstone results mean that Thornhill and Dunn will now go head-to-head in an enthralling Four-stroke v Two-stroke battle for the Proppa MXY2 Masters title on the weekend of September 4/5.
In what has proved to be a title-defining moment, Tom Watts crash on lap four of the opening Kawasaki Masters clash at Hawkstone means that barring disaster his season long rival Zac Stealey will be crowned champion.
With Watts unable to compete in the remaining races Stealey banged in four big, stylish wins, the result being that he now requires just nine points at Pontrilas to bag that lovely 2011 Kawasaki 250F.
Joining Zac on the Hawkstone podium were Edward Briscoe and Kawasaki Masters debutant William Orritt.
