Motocross

Last weekend at a sunny but windy Haverigg Moto Parc in Cumbria round one of this years Thor British Youth Nationals started with two race-packed days of fun in the sun.

Gareth Hockey and his RHL Activities team combined with the hard working Cumbria Motocross Club to put on an excellent event with the sandy track with all it's twists, turns and jumps being in almost perfect condition for the paddock full of keen riders with all five classes get three races each on both of the racing days.

While Jordan Eccles (DRF Husqvarna) managed to notch up five good scores from his six races to win the Open class overall while his fellow competitors seemed to struggle with consistency.

Jay Lamb (Planet KTM) won the first two races on Saturday and Eccles chased him over the line on both occasions but come race three where Eccles won, Lamb crashed out of second place and was relegated to the back of the pack and effectively out of contention for the overall.

This trend continued into Sunday when Lamb won moto four but crashed out of the lead in race five, not once, but twice, which allowed Eccles take his second win of the weekend and relegated Lamb back to eighth at the flag. Lamb made amends by winning the final race but dropped to third overall despite winning four out of the six motos.

Luke Smith's (Harris KTM) weekend got better and better as he failed to get into the top three on Saturday, but mixed it with Eccles and Lamb in all three motos on Sunday that gave him second overall and proved that consistency gets results.

Robbie Dowson (GCM Husqvarna) was never out of the top eight and missed a podium position by a single point with George Grigg-Pettitt (Jim Aim KTM) fifth overall.

One of the fancied riders, Kawasaki-mounted Jay Hague never seemed to get it going and despite scoring two runner-up places, he ended his weekend sixth in class.
