Hawkstone ready for British Masters
By Mike Gurney on 5th Jul 18
The scenic Hawkstone Park on July 21/22 will be the stopping-off point forround four of the Bridgestone British Masters.
And a recap of happenings so far reveals a series attracting some of the best youth talent around. After hitting the podium at all three rounds in the Mercury Business 65s, Will Haddock leads the way in the points standings.
Topping the pile with four solid rides at round one, Will did it again at round two but this time sweeping the board clean with a maximum points haul. Following a round-two date clash with the Judd Racing BYN series, the big guns were back in town for round three as Billy Askew (Judd Orange Brigade) topped the box at Preston Docks, with Mckenzie Marshall runner-up and Haddock third.
Nailing a single race win, Warren Clarke was the round one overall runner-up and a consistent round two show saw him up on the box again in second place.
Hes currently in series second, 23 off the top spot. With the points situation spread widely behind the leading pair, Joey Benfield is comfortable in championship third as Alfie Davis, Travis Barnes and Declan Wright make up the top-six.
Making his substantial mark in the Small-wheel 85s, Revo Husqvarna starlet Ollie Colmer was the overall victor at rounds one and three. In total nailing six race wins along with two second-place finishes Colmer was generally a class apart.
A victim of the date clash for round two hes in series eighth, 97 points adrift of the leader Keelan Hope. Hitting a brace of race wins at round two, Hope was the podium-topper claiming the series lead, finishing second overall at round three means hes still leading 40 points to the good over Liam Bennett.
Behind Bennett the situation is ultra tight as just two points cover third to fifth in the championship, respectively its Charlie Reynolds, Kayde Rayns and Braden Ferguson in the tight chasing bunch. Scooping a single race win Ferguson was the round-one runner up, while other individual heat wins have gone to Joel Fisher, Arai Elcock and Tye Jones.
In the Big-wheel 85s, sponsored by Spanish MX Holidays, excluding wildcard runners, Buster Hart topped the championship pile at round one, Callum Baldwin took everyone to task at round two and Sam Atkinson roared to the overall at round three.
Both Hart and Atkinson are one round down on Baldwin and its Baldwin who heads the championship standings 18 points in front of Harvey Cashmore.
Last years Small-wheel 85s champion Cashmore took podium third at round two Wroxton, he also nailed a single race win there. Sitting in series third 33 points off leading, Sam Davis was the second best championship runner at rounds one and two, and like Cashmore he also hit a single race win at Wroxton.
As far as the other individual race wins go, championship leader Baldwin has two against his name, Hart has one while Atkinson bagged his triple at the most recent Preston Docks round.
Holding a nine-point advantage at the top in the SM Pro Wheels 125s, Cullen Scott was the championship top points scorer at round one as weekend wild-card Sam Nunn topped the box.
Scott was second-best championship scorer at round two Wroxton, and third best last time out at the Docks. Putting three heat wins on his card, Dylan Spencer won round two as Sam Price claimed the best championship points haul at round three.
Hoping to keep his momentum going at Hawkstone Park, Price is 51 points off the top spot in series third and 10 ahead of fourth place runner Troy Willerton. The round two date clash with the BYN series didnt impact on the positions at the top in MXY2, and its Rory Jones who leads the way in this one.
Third in last years series, Jones is currently 28 points ahead of last years fifth-placed finisher, Todd Leadbitter. In a close-fought section, third-placed Aaron Patstone is just two points in front of Sam Ongley as Toby Avis and Kurt Griffiths round out the top six.
When it comes to the individual heat wins wildcard entrants claimed all the glory at rounds one and three and series leader Jones scored his single heat win at Wroxton.
Leadbitter nailed a winning pair there as Ongley took the other round-two race victory.
