SCORCHING red-hot performances from Dane Reeves, David Keet, Ryan Houghton, Joe Jones and Oli Sansom provided some much needed heat at Wilden Lane, for round five of the Winter Championships, where the efforts of the guys already mentioned helped everyone forget just how mind-numbingly cold it really was at the Kidderminster venue. David Keet wasted no time at all in the Junior 65cc races as he flew out of the blocks claiming the first race win with ease and thus set the template for the day as the youngster from the south-coast proved to be far too strong for the rest of the field.
Alex Walton, with three second place finishes, was the best of a small chasing pack with Ethan Gatenby third overall.
Jordan Pyne, Alex Carefoot, and Fraser Pohlen all snatched a race win apiece in a fiercely fought Small-wheel 85cc class. With an excellent supporting cast of Lou Harris, Lewis Houghton and feisty Greg Evans who, with the overall winner Carefoot, put on the best race of the day, tussling relentlessly all the way to the final flag second time out.
Ryan Houghton produced a display that had class stamped all over it as he demolished the Big-wheel 85cc field, taking three straight wins and posting some of the fastest laps recorded at Wilden Lane on an 85cc machine. Dan Thornhill did his best to stick with the Danger UK flier, and spent most of the afternoon in a race of his own, eventually settling for three excellent second place finishes. Alex Davis was the best of the chasers, finishing in third overall.
With his usual ease and self-assurance, Joe Jones romped home, carding an untroubled treble of race wins in Youth 125cc, head and shoulders above the rest. Chris Povey fought hard all afternoon to get the better of Dan Scudamore and Dean Hakes in the tightest of possible finishes as all three guys finished on the same number of points.
In an Adult Open class full of incident, Josh Waterman and Luke Mellows both failed to finish race one after it had looked odds-on that one of them would take the spoils. Josh had a repeat case of the blues in race two as Mellows went on to win that race and also race three, powering home in real style on both occasions as opening race winner, Brad Turner, had his day's proceedings curtailed.
