TWO weeks after the opening round of the National Twin-shock Championship kicked-off at Polesworth, round two of the series was hosted by the newly formed South West Twin-shock Club at their venue at Bycott Farm, Halberton, near Tiverton in Devon.
As with the opening round, the Over 50 class was the first on the line and as the gate dropped it was local man Steve Adams who blasted from the gate ahead of series leader Peter Lightfoot. Although pushed all the way by Lightfoot, by the drop of the finish flag Adams had done enough to secure the opening win of the day. In race two it was Martin Snape who had the drop on the rest of the field in the opening laps, however, Adams was determined to secure his second win of the day and in the final lap he managed to slip past and take it. In the final encounter Snape was determined to get at least one victory for his efforts and after a race long battle with Adams his efforts were rewarded. However, a runner-up position in this final race for Adams was enough to secure him the overall.
In the Masters class new local faces added to the excitement in the three encounters that resulted in some excellent racing for the spectators and competitors alike. In race one it was top championship contender Alan Eaves who took a start to finish victory. In race two, however, it was the local trio of Kristian Marshall, Jason Fraser and Bryan Withers who tussled in the opening laps for top honours. Marshall was the top challenger initially but in the final few bends Fraser used his local knowledge to find a way past and take a much deserved victory.
In the final race of the day Fraser was determined to wrap up the days proceedings with a victory and the crowd were given an excellent display as he rode to a start to finish win giving him the overall for the day.
In the opening race of the Intermediate class it was club member Jon Rutherford who took his Honda 480 to a near perfect victory. In race two, however, it was opening round victor Dave Tunnicliff who was back to winning ways. The final race was won by Cornwall man Richard Carter, with Robert Coxon taking second, which along with a third and fifth was enough to give him the overall for the day.
As with the opening round the Clubman class was fit to burst and as they headed for the first bend the watching crowd knew they were in for some good racing. In race one Carl Boughton had a hard fought battle with Pete Beckerleg and Martin Harris to take the victory. In the second encounter Harris, however, rode a near faultless race to take the race victory. A pointless ride for Boughton in race two meant all was to play for in the final race of the day to see who would take the overall. After four hard fought laps Boughton had secured the victory and the overall for the day.
With such a large open track the competitors in the Veteran class knew that making a good start would count for much and Alan Eaves proved this by taking the opening race of the day. In race two it was another top championship contender, Michael De-Feu, who looked to have the race win sewn up but on the final lap local man Terry House found a way past to take the chequered flag. In the final encounter it was Terry House again who secured a much deserved race win and the overall for the day.
This year the popularity of the 125cc class and the 250cc class meant that the two classes have had to run separately. In the 125cc class Series Sponsor Richard Wood rode his Yamaha to the overall for the day with two race victories and a second position. In the 250cc class Andy Holland battled hard all day with Wayne Twidle, eventually taking three excellent race wins. Terry House had barely recovered from his excellent performances in the Veteran class before he was once again back on his Suzuki claiming victory in the opening two races of the Evolution class. All was looking good for House for a final race victory and the overall before disaster struck halfway around the first lap when mechanical failure struck. This allowed Roy Wells to take a much deserved victory and the overall for the day.
