Iddon talents!

MOTORCYCLES racing in a car park? It may not sound like much, but when those motorcycles are supermoto machines ridden by the country's best supermoto racers and the car park is at the foot of Manchester City's impressive football stadium, you have a recipe for success, and that was last weekend's rounds seven and eight of the 2009 British Supermoto Championship. This was the second time that the championship has visited Sports City and this year Dave Dearden and his team of hard workers had made improvements to the track to make it more competitive and spectacular, which included an lengthened off road section, which didn't see much use because of the bad weather.
The heavy rain on Friday made it too wet for Saturday's round seven, but it was hoped that it would be in use for the Sunday after the intermittent sunshine had dried it out enough.
But the rain started in the early hours of Sunday and hardly stopped all day long with the off-road section only being used in the last Elite race.
In round seven, Mauno Hermunen, on his 450 Husqvarna, grabbed the holeshot at the start of the first Elite race with Matt Winstanley, riding a 450 Moto Supplies Husqvarna, in second, but the race was stopped after a crash involving Ben Robb and David Farmer injured a camera man who was recording the event for TV.
At the restart, it was once again Hermunen in the lead but this time Ady Smith was in second on his Team Smith KTM, and Christian Iddon on his Motoracing KTM third.
For the rest of the race, Iddon hounded Hermunen, hoping for a mistake, which came on the very last lap when Hermunen went just a little bit wide at the end of the start-finish straight, and Iddon, never being one to say no to a half open door, slipped through to take the win.
Keith Farmer, on his Aprilia, found a way around Smith on lap five to take third at the flag as Craig Venske, on another Ady Smith KTM, from eighth at the start went ahead of both David Hartley and Winstanley to finish fifth.
The start of the second race was almost the same as the first with Hermunen getting his second holeshot of the day, but this time Iddon was in his wheel tracks and the scene was set for another race-long battle for two world class riders.
But try as hard as he could, this time Iddon just couldn't find away to get through and had to settle for second, as once again, Keith Farmer found his way around Smith for third place, with Winstanley having a lonely race in fifth.
Race three once again saw Hermunen lead Iddon round the first lap, but on lap four, and in the same place as had passed him in race one, Iddon overtook Hermunen for the lead, and in the excitement to get the lead back, Hermunen slid off his Husqvarna and went back to 17th place.
Iddon grabbed the win and the overall with Keith Farmer following him over the finish line, with Winstanley, Venske and Smith filling the next three places.
In the other classes, Bruce Dingle on his KMS Racing Aprilia won all three of his SXV challenge races with Peter Bennett the runner up on each occasion.
Lewis Cornish once again won all three of his Lites races on his TRM Honda while Ben Stafford was the top scoring junior.
The Cup class saw Dingle grab the overall by winning two out of his three rides.
Gareth Thomas, on his Yamaha-Honda hybrid won the first Quad race and the overall with Sam Hodgson and Colin Jackson taking a win each in the other two races.
