Multi-time Ulster and Irish motocross champion Wayne Garrett continues to make progress after a crash at round six of the Irish championship on July 24 left him with serious spinal injuries.
After recording two third-placed finishes Wayne, who's also competed in the British championship, crashed heavily in the final moto at Doon Motocross Park in County West Meath in the Republic of Ireland.
The race was red-flagged and Wayne was transferred to hospital in Dublin where he has remained ever since.
On Tuesday of this week he had a smaller tracheostomy tube fitted and he has amazed physios with his daily recovery progression and is now breathing on his own.
His wife Sarah, who has been constantly at his side, stated that if Wayne's progress continues at this rate they are hopeful of a transfer nearer home to the Royal Victoria, Belfast, in the very near future. If this happens he'll have to spend the initial few days in ICU isolation as he'll be classed as a foreign transfer.
Wayne has demonstrated amazing powers of recovery over the past couple of years to return from serious leg injuries but faces a long and difficult road this time.
Wayne's good friend Chris Ross has set up a Just Giving page to help further his recovery. To access it go to www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/support-wayne
