It's a Lyng thing
By TMX Archives on 17th Jul 09
THE sand was flying at Lyng last weekend as round five of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship came to the rough, tough Norfolk circuit where only the strong survive.Brad Anderson on his PAR Homes Honda came out on top of a classic battle for the top step of the winners podium with Kawasaki's Gareth Swanepoel in the MX1 class, while Steven Sword dominated the MX2 class on his super fast Red Bull KTM by being fastest in qualifying, getting two holeshots and notching up two stylish wins. Also at the event was the one and only round of the 2009 Maxxis Veterans Championship, where Rob Herring, on a borrowed LPE Kawasaki showed he still knows how to turn on the gas by winning both of his races with relative ease.Mother Nature was very kind to the organisers, ACU/ Norwich Viking MCC, with rain at the beginning of the week before the event and a nice amount overnight on Saturday to make the track in ideal condition and without dust blowing over the reasonably large crowd. MX1 CLASS
BRYAN MacKenzie made full use of his CAS Honda's power as he led the pack into the fast left and right hand corners at the end of the uphill start straight in the first MX1 race, with Carl Nunn on his MVR-D Suzuki in his wheel track, and fastest in qualifying, CCM's Tom Church dogging their every move.
Anderson and Swanepoel were fourth and fifth but the pair wouldn't be staying there for long.
MacKenzie crashed out of the lead on lap five, handing it to a thankful Church, but closing in on Church was Swanepoel, as Anderson struggled to find a way past Nunn. A lap later, Mark Jones limped his Samsung Yamaha back to the paddock while shaking his head as Luke Benstead struggled round with a flat rear tyre on his Danger UK Honda.
By the halfway mark, Swanepoel was in the lead as Anderson caught and passed Church for second while James Noble, from ninth at the start, was moving up through the field. As they crossed the finish line, Swanepoel had a lead of just over eight seconds from Anderson with Nunn a lonely third and Noble fourth, Church fifth after sliding off, and Roe sixth.

MX2 CLASS
THE MX2 class was Sword all the way, as he got the holeshot at the start of the first race with Mel Pocock on his UTAG Yamaha second and a charged up Jake Nicholls on another Red Bull KTM third as Wayne Smith came together with another rider and crashed his Samsung Yamaha in turn one.
Nicholls moved into second on lap two, but Sword had already opened up a nice size gap that would never be closed.
For the rest of the race the two leaders stayed in the same places, but behind them, Mattis Karro on his MVR-D Suzuki, from sixth at the start, passed first Neville Bradshaw for fifth, then Martin Barr for fourth and finally Pocock for third at the finish flag.
Scott Elderfield was making up for a mid-field start on his PAR Homes Honda as he gated 14th but finished sixth, one place behind Barr and Pocock.
Tony Craig had a big crash going into the field section. He got up very slow, but seemed to be OK after the ordeal.

VETERANS
IN the Veterans class, it was Herring all the way proving he has lost little of his racing skills and he led both races from the drop of the gate to the chequered flag.
Local rider Paul Bennett followed Herring home on both occasions, albeit over 30-seconds behind.
Terry House was third on race one, but failed to start the second race while Stephen Elford's fourth and fifth places gave him third overall.
Afterward, the new Veteran's Champion, Herring said: "I wasn't going to ride this weekend, so I came here at the very last minute. I was in a very different frame of mind to when I went to the GP, as I was all psyched up and it didn't really happen for me, so I came here more relaxed and what happened, happened... But it's a shame Greg (Hanson) wasn't here as we have had some good battles with each other.”
The two main championships move to Foxhill, Swindon, in two-weeks time – it should be interesting...
