Motocross

It was like a home GP for the Brits at the weekend as the UK provided the largest, most vociferous visiting fans at the trackside for the Lommel GP, but the flag-waving Channel-crossing hordes didn't just go wild at heroic displays by Shaun, Jake and Brad, they were also giving it their all for Kenny Roczen as the charismatic German teenager put it over the Orange Army in MX2 !

But for the 16 year-old Teka Suzuki hotshot, the Belgian sand blast would have been a KTM whitewash as Toni Cairoli and Max Nagl doubled up at the front of MX1, whilst Jeff Herlings and Marvin Musquin stood either side of Kenny on the MX2 podium.

Again no trophies for the Brits, but Shaun Simpson ran up front all day, Jake Nicholls was headed for a deserved seventh until the bike went pop, and Brad Anderson – "I paid the grand to start meself, to prove I'm fast enough for the Nations” – ran top five in the opener and holeshot race two alongside Nagl to show the world what they are missing.

MX2

Roczen had already shown his sand pace by winning Saturday qualification: "The team did a lot of work on the bike this week, but I have improved a lot in the sand in the last two years.”

He certainly proved that in the first moto as he ran down Kullas, Roelants, Simpson and finally Musquin to take over the lead vacated a couple of laps earlier by odds-on favourite Herlings.

With a lapse of concentration the Dutch kid had planted the front wheel in soft sand entering a turn: "I screwed up. I got back on third and tried to close the gap again, but I kept making mistakes and had to settle for what I had. I knew Ken would win the GP with second in race two, so I had to be satisfied with a moto win; I soon got to plus 25 seconds and cruised at the end.”

Despite a better start in race two Roczen soon knew he had no chance of the double: "I got a good rhythm going straightaway in the first race and could pick them off, but I struggled at the start of race two and couldn't go with Jeff.”

But he had broken the curse with his first GP win of the campaign after fate had intervened so many times in previous rounds: "I already wrote-off the title for this year. I just want to have fun ... and win a few more GPs !”

Musquin upped his game again on Sunday but was content to simply complete the podium; he still leads Roczen by 78 points and Steven Frossard has almost fallen into the clutches of Herlings after a nightmare GP.

Despite third choice of gate after running down the champion on Saturday, Shaun Simpson did not start well in either race but showed clearly that he is getting back his speed and endurance:  "I just can't get the power down at the start here, but, running a consistent pace, I was able to pick them off steadily until I was third in the first race. I didn't have anything for Roczen, but neither did anyone else, and after Jeff fell I could see him in third. When my brother boarded me "four laps " I decided to push to catch Jeff, but it backfired. I wore myself out and it was easy for Roelants.”

And the Scot was not the only Brit running up front. Also running consistent laps Jake Nicholls was a solid seventh for nearly half an hour before the engine went sour and the East Anglian failed to score for the first time all season.

Matiss Karro was a battling 12th from 28th on lap one, Mel Pocock lost contact to the points scorers as his rear brake faded, and Zach Osborne was in discomfort all weekend, only able to stand for short periods in the aftermath of his Foxhills crash.

With Nicholls brought down at turn two in the second moto, it was again down to Simpson to wave the flag and he did so admirably for more than half the race before the recent lapse in his training schedule inevitably bit, the Scot forced to surrender to Paulin, Roelants and Kullas in the closing laps.

Nicholls was setting top six laps to recover from last to 12th, Osborne gritted his teeth to stay just out of reach in 10th, but Karro was angry with himself for losing a potential top ten, saying: "I doubled the bombhole no problem but my front wheel came down in the soft sand.”
