Lord of the Twin Rings
By TMX Archives on 8th Jun 12
TONI Bou extended his 2012 World Trials Championship lead to almost 30 points with a double-win in Japan at the weekend.
The dominant Repsol Montesa rider easily won the opening day's event – staged as-ever at the Honda owned Motegi Twin Ring race track – from Beta's resurgent Jeroni Fajardo.
On the second day Bou just held on to win from a determined attack by Sherco's Albert Cabestany and his own team mate Takahisa Fujinami, who achieved his weekend's ambition to make it onto the podium in his home country.
While it was all smiles from Bou it was a disaster of a weekend for fellow Catalan Adam Raga, as the Gas Gas No.1 slumped to sixth on Saturday and only bettered this by one place on Sunday.
This dropped the current vice champion to fourth in the standings, overtaken by the vastly-improved Fajardo and the ever-consistent Cabestany.
As expected the Motegi trial was based on the periphery of the awesome race facility, which features some impressive steep rock climbs and steps, with a couple of man made obstacles thrown-in for the enthusiastic home spectators.
And as ever there was a good handful of keen Japanese contenders showing plenty of fighting spirit – former World Championship regulars Tomoyuki Ogawa on the Honda and Kenichi Kuroyama on the four-stroke Scorpa (badged as a Yamaha). Both featured in the top 10 over the two days.
It was a mixed weekend for the Brits, with James Dabill making a breakthrough into the top five on the opening day, ahead of Raga but then dropping to ninth on Sunday behind the usual five suspects plus Ossa's Dani Oliveras, Japanese wild-card Honda rider Tomoyuki Ogawa and Michael Brown.
Browny and Jack Challenor effectively traded places over the two days while Alexz Wigg showed flashes of his true ability, breaking into the top 10 with a promising eighth place before unfortunately lapsing back to 14th on day two.
