Husqvarnas Jamie McCanney strengthened his title hopes in this years FIM Enduro World Championship with the top step of the Enduro Junior podium at the GP of Italy in Rovetta.

Steve Holcombe continued to impress on his Beta by beating McCanney for the win on day two. In the Enduro 1 class there was further success for the British contingent in Italy with Danny McCanney carding another third place result on his Husqvarna on day one.

Easily the most challenging race of the season to date, the GP of Italy was a true enduro test for the riders.

Tough and technical special tests with tight time controls ensured that the traditional ways of the sport were very much kept alive in Rovetta.

Adding in a large crowd of passionate and enthusiastic supporters lining the tests, meant that round five of the championship will be one to be remembered and savoured.

Fighting at the sharp end of the Enduro Junior class, both Jamie McCanney and Holcombe set the pace for the rest of their classmates to match. Hitting day one hard, McCanney delivered a near flawless performance to place his Husqvarna on the top step of the podium.

Extend

With Holcombe coming on stronger for day two and McCanney admitting to starting the day badly, the Manxman settled for second but still managed to further extend his championship lead.

"It's yet another great weekend for the championship.

Winning Saturday and then placing second on Sunday I've been able to extend my lead in the championship by a few more important points,” told McCanney.

"Saturday was great, although I had some cramp in my arms on lap three but I had a decent lead at that stage and was able to hold it together to win.

"It's been a tough day two because I messed up at the start. I lost too much time and had to fight hard to recover.

But I'm pleased with how I rode as I proved to myself that my fitness is up to scratch.”

Second to McCanney on day one despite some unforced errors, Holcombe proved that despite his EWC inexperience he's a quick learner and regrouped to take the win on day two. .

"On Saturday I made some stupid mistakes that cost me any shot at winning the race,” admitted Holcombe. "Sunday I made mistakes – I think everyone did – but they weren't as stupid this time. I think that's good. . I suppose sometimes I forget that I've really only done a handful of these races so to finish second on a bad day is a good job.
