Motocross

May Day manoeuvres at Milton Park as marvellous Maxxis reached mid point. A bit of a tongue-twister for sure and there were plenty of tight switchbacks built into the ACUs flagship circuit in Northamptonshire.

But if you were looking for serious twists and turns in the race for the British titles, think again as Brad Anderson and Zach Osborne extended their leads – but  had to pull out all the stops in a day of truly enthralling racing action.

Also on the card in Northamptonshire was round three of the MXY2 series.

MX2 qualifying was again headed by the Dixon GP stars Zach Osborne and Arnaud Tonus but everyone was in for a surprise in Superpole.

Neville Bradshaw, back after injury and on a Maunders Honda, cleverly put himself in group two of a split Superpole session. The track was drying fast in the May-day sun and Bradshaw blasted to a 1min 50.7second lap to grab first pick of the gate.

Arnaud Tonus holeshot the first race of the day but made a mistake half-way around lap one and gave himself a mountain to climb. Team-mate Osborne took it upon himself to take the race lead and rode unchallenged to victory despite a small spill of his own.

DB Honda star Elliott Banks-Browne rode hard for the duration of the 14-lap race, eventually carding third after the marauding Tonus fought his way back up to second at three-quarter distance. Behind the leading trio an almighty scrap developed between Bradshaw, Mel Pocock, Bryan MacKenzie, Steven Clarke and Ray Rowson.

At the flag, Bry Mac nabbed fourth from a tiring TAS Suzuki runner Pocock with Bradshaw and Rowson completing the top seven.

Race two was a stormer. Osborne overshot the devilishly tight first turn leaving Banks, Tonus and Pocock out front.
Meanwhile, back at the first turn Rowson and Mackenzie were in a heap and their day in the sun wasn't looking so rosy. Banks held off Tonus for a good four laps until the bike got away from him in a tight right-hander and he slipped off his machine.

Tonus, Pocock, Bradshaw and a flying Zach Osborne all sped through and the race was on. Osborne soon disposed of Pocock who was nursing a leg injury from a crash last week in Ireland and Bradshaw who was out of race practice but still as fast as ever. Mel held firm in third with Neville carding a fine fourth. Elliot remained in fifth.

At the sharp end, Zach got the magnets on and was reeling Tonus in at a scarcely believable rate. Arnaud made a small error on lap 12 beside the paddock straight and Zach motored through to his second win of the day and seventh of the 2011 campaign.

The Milton Park crowd were treated to a riding demonstration in heat three as the Bike-it Dixon hot-shots rode like it was the last race of the year. They gated together and left the likes of Elliott Banks and Mel Pocock to settle for third and fourth respectively in the race and indeed overall on the day.

American Osborne went hell for leather trying to break Tonus' spirit but the Swiss is made of stern stuff. Tonus was never more than a second or two adrift and made his move on lap nine. Osborne is never more exciting to watch than when he has to chase a rider down. The No.338 red-plate holder pushed as hard as he could but his challenge came to a halt a lap from the flag when he slipped off the Yamaha power-house in the first corner.

No harm was done however as he soon got back on and still carded second. Osborne's second was good enough to give him the overall - his 72point haul meaning he extends his slender championship lead to six points.
Tonus scored 69 points on the day and another silver medal overall. EBB was chuffed with his second podium in a row, meaning he still has control of third in the series standings.

Special mention must go to Anthony Reville and Sunny Thompson – both just teenagers – who were fantastic on the day in tenth and eleventh overall in a top class field.
