Held once a year in Las Vegas Sam Boyd Stadium, the Monster Energy Cup, offers up a $250,000 purse with the added incentive of $1 million to any rider that could win all three of the main races. Stepping up to try and make the cut was 2012 East Lites Supercross Champion, Justin Barcia.
This was his first time on a 450 in a supercross race, and many wondered how he would cope. But three races later he was $100,000 richer after climbing to the top step on the rostrum.
This was no easy feat for the Honda rider, as also in the mix was 2012 AMA Motocross Champion, Ryan Dungey, and making a return to racing after being sidelined due to injury, last years winner, Ryan Villopoto, and Chad Reed. The unique Ricky Carmichael designed track design gave spectators, real value for money, encompassing both Supercross and Motocross sections.
And for the first time ever in competition, a ‘Joker Lane' was used.
This consisted of deep sand that took the riders off the track circuit for approximately six seconds before they rejoined the track.
