Musquin and Roczen Loked in battle
By TMX Archives on 11th Aug 10
Toni Cairoli and Marvin Musquin turned around first moto defeats at the hands of Tanel Leok and Ken Roczen to win their respective MX1 and MX2 classes in a hectic Czech GP at the Serpentine' track overlooking the town on Loket on Sunday. The KTM duo could now complete the successful defence of their world titles in Brazil next week.
Shaun Simpson was best Brit as usual even though a late breakfast put him off his stride, Tom Church nearly broke into the top ten in his first GP since April, but Jake Nicholls went home to get his ankle seen to before the Farleigh round of the Maxxis next weekend.

"I couldn't believe it when the first five in qualification lined up on the outside of the gate, but I guess I got it right when I went in the middle because I got the holeshot,” smiled Roczen after a runaway win in the MX2 opener.
The front men from Saturday's timed session had been seeking a dry run to turn one, but they would have needed a good ten-yard advantage over the inside runners to make it work and a grinning Suzuki supremo Eric Geboers could only shake his head, albeit with pleasure: "Unbelievable!”
Not that Roczen needed a head start. Simpson was the only chaser who wasn't losing at least three-seconds a lap to him in the early stages and the German was cruising at the end for a 30-second victory, having lapped two-thirds of the field.
"I couldn't keep up with Roczen, even though I was able to pull away pretty easy from Herlings,” admitted Shaun.
"But I never loosened up and at 25-minutes I got arm pump and my shoulders stiffened up. They started warm-up half-an-hour early this morning and I was still having my cereal when Stefan came down to tell me it was on. I normally ride the whole session but I only got in four-laps today and paid for it all day.”
The Scot was easy meat for Musquin mid-moto as the Frenchman recovered from his bad gate choice, but "...Herlings and Van Horebeek only got me when a lapper stopped in front of me in a turn.”
Zach Osborne ran ninth for most of the moto before surrendering to Roelants and Kullas late on: "I'm struggling. I've been tired and finding it difficult to concentrate since the crash at Foxhill.”
Maxxis MX2 rival, Jake Nicholls was in an even worse plight after a stunning ride which had seen him force through the pack to 14th at one stage: "Someone ran over my ankle at turn one, then I caught it again but was still running down Michek until I did it again and was in so much pain I just had to pull out.”
Mel Pocock gated right behind Osborne in tenth and kept it until he cross-rutted on a take-off and took the bars in his stomach, while Matiss Karro bounced back from a crash to snatch 12th.
Musquin changed his start gate for race two and responded with the holeshot, but he had nothing on sheer speed for Roczen. The German was fifth after a lap, second next time round and sliced under the Frenchman on lap seven.
But Ken's lead lasted less than half-a-lap: "There was a lapper there, but it wasn't his fault. I changed line and dived inside him, but my front wheel hit a slick patch and I went down.”
Within a few laps he had again run down Musquin, but the champion upped his game to rebuff every attack, winning the moto and the GP! Marvin could win the title in Brazil, but would need a DNF by Roczen.
Simpson again faded slightly in the second half and also ate dirt courtesy of Van >>> <<
Of equal consequence was a first lap get-off for Herlings as he slid out on a downhill. The Dutch kid had inherited third in the points after race one when Frossard got no further than 14th from a first lap crash, but he was taken to hospital with a dislocated right shoulder and can probably wave goodbye to the series bronze medal as a result.
