Shaun Simpson withdrew from the French GP after two practice sessions. The Scot had broken a bone on the outside of his right hand one week earlier during the second moto in Spain but finished the race and flew home to Scotland before he sought medical advice.

"I didn't realise anything was wrong until my hand swelled up in the evening and I still haven't seen a specialist, just my GP,” he said. "I tried it one session at a time to see how the pain is as my hand warms up but my greatest concern here is the danger if I get out of shape and can't hold on.

"This place doesn't forgive mistakes and one slip on the pebbles could be dangerous. If I'm not fast enough to score points I won't ride.”

After finishing six seconds off the pace in both practices, Shaun packed his bags but it is not expected that his appearances at the Desertmartin round of the Maxxis series or the Matterley GP are in danger. He left France on Saturday afternoon to drive back to Belgium where he had an appointment with Doctor Claes on Monday morning.
