Jorge Prado looking to regroup after dropping mountain of points at Kegums MXGP
By Andrew Hill on 24th Apr 22
Jorge Prado gifted MXGP title rival Tim Gajser a massive advantage in the FIM Motocross World Championship after two Grand Prix-destroying crashes at Kegums in Latvia.
Prado greased the start in the first race, bagged another holey, and then controlled much of the moto. However, Gajser would eventually find a way past before the Spaniard pushed a late-race charge.
An opportunity never really looked on for the factory GASGAS star, and it ended with Prado jumping on Gajser's back wheel. The contact rocked the Team HRC man, but he stayed rubber side down; Prado was less fortunate. It took a long time for Prado to recompose, and he would drop to 12th place by the time the chequered flag fell.
Prado was left to salvage 13th in moto two after another crash early on and was eventually ranked 12th overall. While Prado held onto his second place in the championship standings, his errors cost him a mountain of points, leaving him 66 points adrift from the summit.
"Saturday was good and Sunday was okay," Prado said. "It is just a pity about the crash that happened when I was trying to make a pass for the lead. I was good before that the track was quite tricky.
"I was ready to do well in the second moto, but I went down at the beginning of the race. I just could not regroup after that. We will reset now and go again at the next round."
Prado has one week off to flush out a pretty terrible Grand Prix before he is back it, with the familiar surroundings of Italy and the iconic Maggiora circuit.
