Top 5 MOST Memorable Matterley Moments
By Team TMX on 19th Mar 19
The Matterley Basin track is set in a natural bowl in the picturesque Winchester countryside and provides unrivalled views for the thousands of motocross fans that make their way to the circuit every year to watch either a round of the Motocross World Championship or if they're really lucky, the Motocross of Nations.
There have been some epic motocross moments at the stunning Matterley circuit and we've put together what we think are the top five most memorable Matterley moments.
Jeffrey Herlings is the only rider to get a mention twice and we have two British riders on the list. Not that we're biased or anything.
5. 2006: Stefan Everts vs James Stewart MXdN
In his last competitive races before he retired Stefan Everts went head to head with James Stewart over two days at Matterley Basin. While Bubba claimed first blood as he took the win in the MX1 Qualifying Race, Everts would take the points-paying motos on the Sunday. Stewart and Team USA, however, would leave with the spoils.
Race 3 below is well worth the watch.
4. 2006: Tony Cairoli winning MX2 + Open MXdN moto on 250f
Open rider Ivan Tedesco took the early lead for the Americans followed by Frenchman Christophe Pourcel. Meanwhile, two young 250f riders Ryan Villopoto and Tony Cairoli were lying in fourth and fifth respectively with Cairoli four-seconds behind RV2. It wouldn't take long for the impressive MX2 duo to reel in the riders in front.
A mistake from the hard-charging Villopoto opened the door for Cairoli who then set about catching Tedesco and with nine minutes left on the clock took the lead, much to the delight of the Matterley crowd.
Villopoto impressively recovered from his off to secure second behind Cairoli.
3. 2017: Max Anstie double victory at MXoN
An incredible weekend of racing from Max Anstie as he added his name to the list of British motocross legends, besting three MXGP world champions with two moto victories to help Team GB to a third place at Matterley Basin.
Watch Anstie's battle with Romain Febvre and then relive the motos with the highlights edit.
2. 2018: Jeffrey Herlings stunning wins against Tony Cairoli at MXGP of Great Britain
Watch Herlings and Cairoli push the limits at Matterley. Goosebumps!
1. 2012: Tommy Searle vs Jeffrey Herlings
