No Payne no gain
By Mike Wood on 31st Aug 12
So far, the 2012 AMCA MX Championships are again proving to be another intriguing and unpredictable series!
During the round three action, at Pontrilas, on Sunday, in a meeting expertly promoted by the Gloucester MXC, Jack Cox became the third different pace-setter in the race for MX2 honours while Clinton Barrs slightly increased his advantage in the MX1 title bash by a further two points, as Lee Payne topped the podium on the day.
Other notable happenings at Pontrilas was a third overall for reigning MX2 Champ Shane Holmes as the Jones boys, Martin and Ryan, bagged impressive MX2 top ten overall slots while over in MX1, Luke Dean earned his maiden AMCA MX Championship race win.
Once again though it was a difficult start for the AMCA Championship lads as thunderstorms from the previous day had meant that conditions during qualifying were particularly sticky. Gradually though, the track dried out leaving riders with an absolute maze of ruts but choosing the right ones for the fastest lines was the challenge.
When the gate dropped for moto one it was Jack Cox, looking to follow up on his recent win at Brookthorpe who led with Joseph Del-Busso, Carl Benjamin, Martin Jones, Ryan Crowder, Paul Neale and Brandon Benjamin in tow.
Drama on the very first lap saw current MX2 series leader Ben Saunders forced out with mechanical problems while reigning Champion Shane Holmes was down in 12th.
Just one lap later Carl Benjamin had moved up to second as Neale zoomed past Jones and Crowder for fourth as Ryan Morris worked hard to slot impressively into sixth only to disappear from the proceedings!
Up front, Cox dictated all the way to the chequered flag to bag the first race win of the day as Neale expertly passed Benjamin on the final lap to earn a richly deserved second.
So with one down and two to go, the heat was on as Cox moved to the top of the title standings courtesy of his moto win and the unfortunate Saunders DNF!
Would Saunders bounce back? Well, after gating fifth, Ben quickly passed Del-Busso and Martin Jones but that's as good as it got for the KTM ace. Again leading from gate to flag, it was another victory for that man Cox.
Returning to the circuit where he had bagged a British Masters win, Crowder moved through from an early seventh to replace second placed Ryan Morris as the unlucky Cradley Kawasaki rider dropped back to 15th.
