Nobody's Beta than Jack!

SEVENTEEN year-old Jack Challoner won the Yeadon Guiseley club's DT Smith Trophy Trial at Addingham Moorside, riding, for the first time, a powerful 290cc Beta-UK machine and the brand new EVO model at that!Challoner has had to ride a 125cc Beta in World and European events to date but, from January, is free to ride any capacity machine in International events. It was an acid test, jumping in at deep end in this Yorkshire Centre Champ-ionship event at, of all venues, the unyielding rocks on the Moorside. Fortunately the skies were blue and the hardware fair to dry but the ground was soft so there was the inevitable mud dragged onto the sections. Despite the new machine, the no-stop rule, and 20 tough sections, Jack managed to beat top national trial winners Dan Thorpe and Chris Pearson.
A total of 103 riders took part, riding a two-lap course with sections at three different venues. Sunday was not about the battle of the Moorside because Y-G had recruited Cherry Dabill as chief marshal and Cherita spelt out the game plan. The Youths did their own thing on the Moorside, riding the ten sections four times.
The big boys rode a lap, then motored down to Pratts where the rocks and drops are even more daunting. A lap of five sections, then on to Emmott's and its little stream and big banks. Two laps and five sections and then it was up the hill and back into Pratts to ride the same sections again with a finale up at the Moorside.
Renee Smith was in command of the first section but the two rocks, about five feet apart, with a chasm of nothingness underneath, deciding the fate of the Hard course riders. Hard to take but only Jack and Chris Pearson cleaned, on both laps!
